UC Merced 5K run
The UC Merced Journey 5K Fund Run to support student scholarships will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday near the Lantern at UC Merced, 5200 N. Lake Road, Merced. Race-day registration opens there at 7:30 a.m. The adult run fee is $10. Parking is free in the Lake Lot. For more, call 209-228-2586 or email alumni@ucmerced.edu.
Quilt show
The Los Banos Arts Council Quilt Guild’s quilt show is planned for 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Ted Falasco Arts Center, 1105 Fifth St., Los Banos. Cost is $7, and tickets are good for both days. For more, call Judy at 209-827-8892.
Republican Women
Merced County Republican Women Federated will meet at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 19 at the Branding Iron Restaurant, 640 W. 16th St. Ric Kirby, the owner of Kirby Manufacturing Inc., will be the speaker. He is expected to talk about his company, the dairy industry and the state’s drought. Bunco is planned after the luncheon and is a fundraiser. Reservations made are reservations paid. Rigatoni dinner
Merced Breakfast Lions Club’s annual Rigatoni Take-Out Dinner will be ready for pickup from 4 to 6 p.m. Sept. 28 at the Italo-American Lodge, 1351 W. 18th St., Merced. Rigatoni, salad and a roll are $8. Proceeds benefit local projects and youth activities. Tickets are available from any Merced Breakfast Lions Club member or at the door.
Aikido class

Masters gardeners
The Mariposa Master Gardener Program is looking for gardeners who would like to improve their skills and help educate other gardeners about the art and science of growing in the Sierra foothills. The four-hour, weekly meetings are January to May in Catheys Valley. Fee for the class is $195. Prospective trainees must fill out an application at cemariposa.ucanr.edu/Master_Gardener or by calling 209-966-2417. Deadline is Oct. 31. To learn more, there will be a “meet and greet” with new and veteran gardeners from 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 15 at the Mariposa County Board of Supervisors chambers, 5100 Bullion St., Mariposa.
