Merced library holiday sale
Friends of the Merced County Public Library will hold its annual holiday sale in the library’s main branch, 2100 O St., Merced, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. There will be books, gifts, cards and many “buy one, get one free” items. Proceeds go to the county libraries to buy new materials. Donations are welcome and can be left in the bookstore.
‘Lights Before Christmas’ at Applegate Zoo
The stars of the Applegate Zoo will be highlighted from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday for the “Lights Before Christmas” holiday extravaganza. Kids of all ages can make decorations in Santa’s Workshop, pet some of the “reindeer” and visit with Santa. Cost is $3, with kids 5 and under $1. The zoo is at 1045 W. 25th St. (25th and R). California Central Valley Journey for Justice
The public is invited to join the California Central Valley Journey for Justice in celebrating the 68th anniversary of the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Music Room of the United Methodist Church of Merced, 899 Yosemite Parkway. “A Right to Water is a Right to Life” will feature a panel discussion of the balance between water for agricultural use, recreational use and access to safe drinking water. Art of Giving workshop
Mariposa Art Company will host the third Art of Giving workshop from 3 to 5 p.m. today. The gallery is at 3600 Thunderbird Ave. inside Castle Airport Aviation and Development Center. This is a free event. For more information, email mariposaartcompany@gmail.com.
Merced holiday dance
A holiday dance is set for Sunday at the Merced Senior Community Center, 755 W. 15th St. Tango lessons begin at 1:15 p.m. and music is scheduled for 2 to 5 p.m. Cost is $8. For more information, call 209-723-0839 or 209-628-8734.
Book fair at St. Anthony School
A Scholastic Book Fair will be held at St. Anthony School, 1801 Winton Way, Atwater, from Tuesday through Friday in the small hall. Hours of operation will be Tuesday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.; during the preschool and elementary school’s Christmas plays from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday; and Friday from 8 a.m. to noon. There will be books for all ages from preschool to adult. Stop by for some great Christmas gifts.
Art show and auction
An art show and auction is set for 2 to 4 p.m. Friday at Pacifica Senior Living, 3420 R St., Merced. The public is invited to attend and enjoy hors d’oeuvres, artwork, crafts and belly dancers. For more information, call 209-384-9700.
Animal giving trees
Throughout December, New Beginnings for Merced County Animals’ Giving Trees will be displayed at three locations: Valley Animal Hospital and Santa Fe Pet Hospital, both in Merced; and Merced County Animal Services in Atwater. Donors select a card from the tree that shows an area of need, write the amount of donation on the card and replace it on the tree. The donation is then given to a receptionist. Donations will be allocated according to the need specified on the card: transport, medical or spay/neuter. All proceeds benefit animals of Merced County. For more information, call 209-769-8953.
Dancing for Birth
Merced College Community Services will be offering Dancing for Birth beginning Jan. 9 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Mondays through Feb. 6. The cost is $20 per participant. For more information, call 209-384-6224 or email communitysvc@mccd.edu.
