‘Into the Woods’

Playhouse Merced’s production of “Into the Woods” continues through March 15. Battle of the Books

El Capitan High School on Friday will hold the Merced Union High School District’s fifth annual Battle of the Books. The event starts 4 p.m. at the school’s library and ends at 7 p.m. in the school’s theater, 100 Farmland Ave. in Merced. OES Breakfast

Yosemite Gateway Chapter 126 Order of the Eastern Star will hold its annual gourmet breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon Sunday at the Merced Masonic Center at 1810 M. Street. Breakfast will include ham, scrambled eggs, hash browns, apricot crepes, cinnamon rolls, muffins, juice, coffee, tea and milk. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 10. This is the order’s main fundraiser of the year, and all proceeds go to support the chapter. Tickets are available at the door or by calling Debby Hoban at (209) 358-1083.

Valley author

The public is invited to a presentation by Valley author Dimitri Keriotis at 6 p.m. March 12 at the Wendell Olson Forum, on the second floor of the Merced College Library, 3600 M St. Keriotis teaches English at Modesto Junior College and co-coordinates the High Sierra Institute. His debut collection of short stories, “The Quiet Time,” was released by SFA Press. The program is free. Light refreshments will be served after the presentation. The author will also sign copies of his new book.

Happy Trails group

The Happy Trails Social Group will be traveling to Oakdale on March 14 to join the Sierra Lunch Train. The group will meet at 9:45 a.m. at Atwater Baptist Church, 2124 First St., in Atwater. Cost is $70. For more information and reservations, call Donna Plett at (209) 358-3693.

ServSafe training

Merced College Business Resource Center is holding a ServSafe training class Tuesday and March 17 from 8 a.m. to noon. The cost is $179 per participant. The center is at 630 W. 19th St. For more information, call (209) 384-6224.

Call for exhibits

The Merced College Art Gallery is considering solo and group exhibits for the upcoming fall and spring semesters. The gallery coordinator and Merced College art faculty schedule six exhibits for the academic year. Artists are encouraged to submit a portfolio for this year’s selection process. Portfolios need to be mailed or delivered to the gallery for review. Include 20 digital images of artwork, an artist bio and an artist statement. A self-addressed, stamped envelope should be included if materials need to be returned. Deadline for entries is March 30.
