Race to Kiddieland Train
The second “Race to The Kiddieland Train” will be held Saturday at Applegate Park in Merced. There will be a 2-mile walk/run, 5-mile run and 1-mile kids’ fun run. The kids’ fun run starts at 8:30 a.m., with the other events set to start at 9 a.m. Registration begins at 8 a.m. at Applegate Park. The entry fee is $15 per person and includes a T-shirt. The 2-mile and 5-mile events will follow the Bear Creek bike trail. For more information, call (209) 777-0953
Sober grad volunteers
The Merced and Golden Valley Sober Grad committee is looking for volunteers to help provide a fun and safe place for 2015 graduating seniors. Graduation for Merced High and Golden Valley will be June 4. Organizers need adult volunteers after the graduations to be at the joint Sober Grad festivities at Golden Valley High School. The Sober Grad event is from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. Volunteers are needed for two hours, three hours or all night from 9:45 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. At least 200 volunteers are being sought. Scholarship program
Central Valley Opportunity Center is holding its 2015 scholarship program. CVOC has been offering scholarships to academically deserving students in its tri-county service area – Madera, Merced and Stanislaus – for more than 36 years. Six scholarships in the amount of $1,500 each will be awarded in each county on a competitive basis. Students must have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 and must be planning on attending a post-secondary educational institution in the fall. Financial need will be considered. Applications are available at all high schools in the three counties. Interested students need to contact their high school counselor or contact Alicia Chavez at achavez@cvoc.org or (209) 357-0062, ext. 123. The scholarship application can be downloaded by visiting CVOC’s website at www.cvoc.org. Application deadline is April 3.
Easter egg hunt
The Kiwanis Club of Greater Merced’s 25th annual Easter Egg Hunt at Applegate Park will be held April 4. All children through the age of 10 are invited. Kids 4 years old or younger will hunt eggs at 10 a.m. on the park’s tennis court. Children ages 5 to 7 will hunt for eggs in Area 1 next to the tennis court at 10:15 a.m. and children ages 8 to 10 will hunt for eggs in Area 2, next to the skate park, also at 10:15 a.m. Candy-filled plastic eggs will be used for the event, with some of them containing receipts for special prizes. Merced, Golden Valley and Livingston Key Club members assisted in preparations for the event by helping fill the some 3,000 plastic Easter eggs with candy and prizes. Old-time barn dance
A barn dance featuring live music with the Home Stilled String Band – with mandolins, fiddles and more – as well as dance caller Nick Cuccia will be held at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the American Legion Hall, 939 W. Main St., Merced. Veterans will provide a no-host bar. Admission is free. Merced College and UC Merced students are encouraged to attend.
