‘The Centurion’

Landmark Tabernacle at 1927 Olive Ave., Atwater, is staging a performance and re-enactment of the life and crucifixion of Jesus Christ entitled “The Centurion” at 7 p.m. Saturday and 4:30 p.m. Sunday. It features a cast of 107. The performances are free and open to the public.

Yard sale

Sierra Saving Grace Homeless Project is holding a yard sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 9-10 at 1445 W. 10th St., Merced. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the homeless. For questions, call (209) 769-6932.

Tea party

The 20th Annual Tea Party in the historic courtroom at the Courthouse Museum will be held on April 11 from 12:30 to 4 p.m. The historic Superior Courtroom will be transformed into an elegant tearoom, and “Victorian Tea Party” is this year’s theme. There will be four seatings: 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Each seating will last for 40 minutes. Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $10 for children 10 years of age and under. Three raffle prizes – two traditional tea baskets and a child’s tea basket – will also be available. Call the museum office at (209) 723-2401 and reserve seating time early.

Republican Women

The Merced County Republican Women will meet April 20 at the Branding Iron. The speaker will be our Dorothy Bizzini, who recently returned from Romania. She and three other women shared personal and financial information to help improve people’s lives there. The meeting is at 11:30 a.m., with lunch at noon. Founder’s Day

Members of the Merced Area Council of Beta Sigma Phi will celebrate the organization’s Founder’s Day on April 25 with a luncheon at the Branding Iron restaurant in Merced. This is the group’s 84th anniversary. Women from Merced, Mariposa, Atwater and Los Banos make up the local chapters. Those interested in the event or joining Beta Sigma Phi can call (209) 385-5359.

Junior Olympics

The Kiwanis Club of Merced is seeking volunteers to help at the 71st annual Junior Olympics on April 25 at Golden Valley High School. Volunteers will also be needed April 23-24. The club will have an informational meeting for volunteers April 15 at the Bar B-Q Pit on G St. For more information, call (209) 756-4014.

Teacher training

The UC Merced Writing Project’s Teacher Leadership Institute, an intensive learning experience on effective teaching practices, is planned this summer. Those in the class meet from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Monday through Thursday for four weeks in the summer.
