UC Merced Chicano literature series

The UC Merced Center for the Humanities Chicano/a Literature Series will present Mexican-American novelist, poet, writer, essayist and scholar Ana Castillo from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. Tuesday in the Bobcat Lair room of the library at the 5200 Lake Road campus. Merced Relay for Life

Merced is having its Relay for Life event April 25 at Don Odishoo Field at Merced College. Cancer survivors register at 7:30 a.m. on the 50-yard line at the Survivorship Tent. Upon registration, they will receive a free shirt. The kickoff begins at 8:45 a.m., followed by the Survivors Lap. The event lasts for 24 hours, ending Sunday at 9 a.m. Family and friends are invited to celebrate and remember those touched by cancer.

Merced Horsemen trail ride

The Merced Horsemen’s trail ride at Pacheco State Park is scheduled for April 25. Participants should meet at the park at 9:30 a.m., with the ride beginning at 10 a.m. There is a $5 fee per rider. For more information, call (209) 756-0620 or (209) 631-3108.

NAACP membership drive

Merced County NAACP Branch 1047 will hold its membership drive at 6 p.m. April 27 at Merced City Hall, 678 W. 18th St. Refreshments will be served. For more information, call Kenneth Roberts at (209) 761-6869.

Italian Catholic Federation

The Italian Catholic Federation’s Spring Biscotti/Bake Sale will be held at St. Patrick’s Church on May 2-3. The sale will take place after each of the Masses. Cookies and biscotti will be available. Biscotti varieties include almond, almond with anise, almond with chocolate, almond with cranberries and biscotti without almonds. Biscotti costs $7 per dozen. To preorder, call (209) 383-4819. Orders can be picked up at the parish hall from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. May 1.

Castle plans waffle fundraiser

Castle Air Museum plans its annual strawberry waffle brunch from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 3 in the museum’s banquet room, 5050 Santa Fe Drive, Atwater. The menu includes a waffle topped with strawberries and whipped cream or butter and maple syrup, as well as sausage and a drink. Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for children 6 or younger. New Hope Church yard and tri-tip sandwich sale

New Hope Church Women’s Ministry will be having a yard and tri-tip sandwich sale to fund Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets that are provided to families in need. The yard sale will be held from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 16. Tri-tip sandwiches will be sold from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost of the sandwich is $6, which includes chips and a drink. The New Hope Church is located at 2150 Cherry St. in Merced. For more information or to buy sandwich tickets, call (209) 723-6433.
