UC Merced Chicano literature series
The UC Merced Center for the Humanities Chicano/a Literature Series will bring Mexican-American novelist, poet, writer, essayist and scholar Ana Castillo to Merced from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. Tuesday in the Bobcat Lair room of the library of the 5200 Lake Road campus. Building Healthy Communities
Building Healthy Communities is holding its South Merced Spring Community Circle from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Tenaya Middle School auditorium, 760 W. Eighth St. Established as a means of highlighting successes within the community, this all-ages event is free and open to the public. A variety of games, activities and live music by the school band will be available. Refreshments will be provided free-of-charge. For more information, call (209) 383-4242.
Le Grand Garden Club tour
“Country Charm at the Farm” is the theme for the Le Grand Garden Club Annual Garden Tour on Wednesday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This year’s event features five gardens within the extended Le Grand area. NAACP membership drive
Merced County NAACP Branch 1047 will hold its membership drive at 6 p.m. April 27 at Merced City Hall, 678 W. 18th St. Refreshments will be served. For further information, call Kenneth Roberts at (209) 761-6869.
Church Women United
Church Women United in the Merced Area is hosting its annual May Friendship Day on May 1 at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 1455 E. Yosemite Ave., Merced, with a potluck luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The theme is “Journey of the Caregiver.” Ami Marchini, owner of Park Merced and Mission Gardens Assisted Living, will be the guest speaker. Special guests will be recipients of our Community Outreach Grants that are given annually.
Mario Granado Memorial Breakfast
The Mario Granado Memorial Breakfast will be held from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 3 at the fire station, 699 Broadway, Atwater. It will be a pancake and menudo breakfast. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 12 and under. All proceeds benefit the Mario Granado Scholarship Fund. The event is hosted by the state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection/Atwater Fire Department and the Granado family. For more information, call (209) 357-6352 or (209) 769-7684.
