Cemetery volunteers
The Merced Cemetery District needs volunteers to help honor veterans by placing a flag and a cross on the graves of military heroes at 9 a.m. Saturday. This will be in preparation for a Memorial Day Ceremony. Meet at the main office at 1300 B St. Coffee and doughnuts will be served. Lunch will also be provided. Last year, 71 volunteers finished the job in four hours. For more information, call the Merced Cemetery District at (209) 383-4111.
Free document shredding
Travis Credit Union, in partnership with Casey Moving Systems, invites Merced residents and small businesses to a free document shredding from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 30 at Travis Credit Union’s Atwater branch, 981 Bellevue Road. Each person or small business can bring up to five boxes or bags of documents to be shredded. Information and resources on identity theft prevention will also be available.
Merced Parent Preschool
Merced Parent Preschool alumni are getting together at 5:30 p.m. June 2 at the school, 125 E. 18th St. Anyone who has participated either as a parent or as a preschooler in the program since 1947 is welcome to attend. State legislation eliminating the funding of parenting programs at Merced Adult School is forcing the closure of the school. If you wish to attend, call the school at (209) 385-6453 or email jrobbins@muhsd.org so organizers can plan for the barbecue. Photos of the school would be appreciated for the memorabilia tables.
Volunteer drivers
Disabled American Veterans is looking for men and women to be volunteer drivers for veterans. Volunteering ensures that veterans living far from Veterans Affairs hospitals can make their appointments and not go without the treatment they need. DAV provides a van and fuel. For more information, call (559) 225-6100, ext. 6907.
Business counseling
SCORE is a national nonprofit organization that provides no-cost counseling to small businesses, and is joining with the Greater Merced Chamber of Commerce to provide this service. For more information, to become a SCORE volunteer or to make an appointment, call (209) 384-7094 or go to 1640 N St., Suite 120.
