National Night Out in Merced
The Merced Police Department hosts the 35th annual National Night Out from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in neighborhoods throughout the city. The nationwide event features law enforcement agencies spending time outdoors in neighborhoods for a variety of events including block parties, parades, flashlight walks, contests, youth activities and anti-crime rallies. The main event in Merced will be held at that time at Applegate Park and will include free food, Kiddieland rides, music, raffle prizes and public safety displays. Odd Fellows breakfast
The La Grange Odd Fellows host their monthly breakfast (always the second Sunday), to benefit Lafayette Lodge #65. The next breakfast is served 8 to 11 a.m. Aug. 12 at the IOOF Hall, 30018 Yosemite Blvd., La Grange. For more information, call 209-853-2128.
Playhouse Merced Gala
Playhouse Merced will host their annual Gala Event to benefit live theater and educational arts programs, beginning at 6 p.m. on Aug. 18 in Downtown Merced at Bob Hart Square. For more information, contact the theater box office at 209-725-8587.
Merced Police Citizens Police Academy
The Merced Police Department is offering a free Citizens Police Academy. Classes for the 11-week program will be held weekly on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. starting Sept. 5 at the central police station, 611 West 22nd St., Merced. The deadline to enroll is 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24 or when the class reaches 28 participants. Old Time Western BBQ
Merced County Historical Society will host its 28th annual old-time western barbecue and auction in memory of Bill Kirby at Lake Yosemite on Sept. 11. Both live and silent auctions will feature fabulous dinners, vacation getaways, antique items, gourmet food, and artwork. Tickets cost $50 and are now on sale in the Courthouse Museum Gift Shop. Live music will be provided by Evening Edition. For more information, call the museum office at 209-723-2401. Proceeds benefit Courthouse Museum programs and scholarships.
