Funding workshop

Building Healthy Communities will present a Local Control Funding Formula community workshop on the state’s new school funding system from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Boys and Girls Club of Merced County, 615 W. 15th St. It is free and open to the public.

Mental health meeting

The Merced County Mental Health Department is holding a combined Mental Health and Alcohol and Other Drug Problems board meeting from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Mental Health Department, 1137 B St. After the meeting, there will be a public hearing on the Mental Health Services Act Program Update for fiscal years 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17. Both are open to the public.

Trail ride

The Merced Horsemen’s trail ride will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Pacheco State Park off Highway 140, 20 miles west of Los Banos. There will be a $5 insurance fee and a $10 parking fee. For more information, call Bob Hefner at (209) 756-0620.

Free document shredding

Travis Credit Union, in partnership with Casey Moving Systems, invites Merced residents and small businesses to a free document shredding from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Travis Credit Union’s Atwater branch, 981 Bellevue Road. Each person or small business can bring up to five boxes or bags of documents to be shredded. Information and resources on identity theft prevention will also be available.

Parent Preschool

Merced Parent Preschool alumni are getting together at 5:30 p.m. June 2 at the school, 125 E. 18th St. Anyone who has participated either as a parent or as a preschooler in the program since 1947 is welcome to attend. State legislation eliminating the funding of parenting programs at Merced Adult School is forcing the closure of the school. If you wish to attend, call the school at (209) 385-6453 or email jrobbins@muhsd.org so organizers can plan for the barbecue. Photos of the school would be appreciated for the memorabilia tables.

Women’s luncheon

Women who have worked at the Farmers Insurance Group regional office are invited to lunch at 11 a.m. on June 4 at DiCicco’s Italian restaurant, 3360 Highway 59. The lunch is $15. For information or to make a reservation, call (209) 723-4317.

Pet carriers

New Beginnings of Merced needs carriers for the 200-plus animals they transport from Animal Control to no-kill rescues each month. Any carriers appropriate for animals 30 pounds and under in usable condition are acceptable, as are new carriers or money for their purchase. Receipts can be provided for tax purposes. Atwater residents please call (209) 658-8553 and Merced residents call (209) 769-8953.
