Gay charity pageant

The 3M Quad-County Pageant, a show featuring men, women and drag queens from Merced, Stanislaus, Tuolomne and Calaveras counties, begins with a dinner at 5:30 p.m. June 6 at Merced Women’s Club House, 707 W. 22nd St. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Peripheral neuropathy

The Merced Peripheral Neuropathy Support Group’s next meeting begins at 1 p.m. June 11 at the Hoffmeister Center, 1920 Canal St. There will be a roundtable discussion, and handouts will be available. For more information, call Larry Frice at (209) 358-2045.

Young writers academy

The Bobcat Young Writers Academy runs 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays, June 15-25, at UC Merced. The program offers students entering grades 1 through 8 in the fall the opportunity to develop their talents as writers. Students will write, share, discuss, revise and edit their writing with other young writers under the guidance of UC Merced Writing Project teacher consultants. Enrollment costs $215 per student and $190 for additional students from the same family. Iraqi survivor

The Merced County Republican Women will host a survivor from the Saddam Hussein regime as speaker at 11:30 a.m. June 15 at the Branding Iron. The meeting begins at 11:30 a.m. with lunch served at noon. Lydia Kano, born in Baghdad, says she is one of four children who survived Saddam’s regime. With the help of her parents, she came to America in 1979 and is now an American citizen with a college degree. She will talk about ISIS and the genocide that is happening to northern Assyrian Christians. To make reservations, call (209) 812-4398 or (209) 761-0550 by June 10.
