Open call for artists to work on mural
The Mariposa Art Company is seeking urban and street artists ages 16 to 25 to participate in a mural in the Beachwood/Franklin area of Merced. Submissions are due Wednesday. For more information and to obtain an application, go to the art group’s website.
Tea party meeting
The Merced-Atwater Tea Party’s regular monthly meeting will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Atwater Memorial Building, Fifth Street and Broadway Avenue. The speaker will be Eric Eisenhammer, founder of the Coalition of Energy Users. He will be talking about the California Air Resources Board, fracking, gas taxes and job creation. This event is open to the public.
Merced College Badminton class
Merced College Community Services will be offering badminton classes beginning July 1 from 8 to 10 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays through July 29. The cost is $40 per participant. For more information, call (209) 384-6224 or email communitysvc@mccd.edu.
NAUS Meeting at Castle Air Museum
The National Association for Uniformed Services, H. Wayne Hein Chapter 18, will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Castle Air Museum banquet room. Genealogy lecture
Barbara Washburn is the speaker this month at the Merced County Genealogical Society meeting. Washburn is a family history specialist with more than 20 years of experience. Her topic is “Finding Lost Cousins and Living Relatives.” The meeting is at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Gracey Room, Merced County Library, 2100 O St. The meeting is open to the public.
Merced Sun-Star business awards
The Merced Sun-Star has launched a new program aimed at recognizing the community’s best businesses and their owners. The Excellence in Business program will grant eight awards to area businesses, and one person in the community will receive the Hall of Fame award. Winners will be announced July 29 in the Sun-Star. To nominate a business or a person, click here. The deadline to submit nominations is July 16.
Advocates for children
Court Appointed Special Advocates of Merced County will begin a new volunteer advocate training class June 29. The nonprofit CASA trains volunteers to provide support and advocacy for abused and neglected children in the Merced County foster care system. For more information, call CASA at (209) 722-2272.
Volunteer drivers
Disabled American Veterans is looking for men and women to be volunteer drivers for veterans. Volunteering ensures that veterans living far from Veterans Affairs hospitals can make their appointments and not go without the treatment they need. DAV provides a van and fuel.
