Merced Sun-Star business awards

The Merced Sun-Star has launched a new program aimed at recognizing the community’s best businesses and their owners. The Excellence in Business program will grant eight awards to area businesses, and one person in the community will receive the Hall of Fame award. Winners will be announced July 29 in the Sun-Star. To nominate a business or a person, click here. The deadline to submit nominations is Thursday.

Chicken Dinner-To-Go orders

Yosemite Gateway Council of the Blind is holding its annual “Barbecue Chicken Dinner-To-Go” on Aug. 5. Pickup is available from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 3:30-5:30 p.m. at 1240 D St. in Merced. Orders can be placed by emailing yosemitegatewayccb@gmail.com or leaving a message at 209-722-8118.

Summer Family Health Festival in Atwater

Castle Family Health Centers will be having the eighth annual Summer Family Health Festival from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 8 at 3605 Hospital Road in Atwater and admission is free. The event offers free health screenings for vision, hearing, diabetes, blood pressure, breast exams and dental for children. Sports physicals for $25 each. Sports physicals can be obtained from Aug. 3 through Aug. 8. The number to call is 209-381-2027. 25th Bill Kirby Western Barbecue & Auction

Merced County Historical Society will host its 25th annual old-time western barbecue in memory of Bill Kirby at Lake Yosemite on Sept. 8. The event will feature live and silent auctions for dinners, vacation getaways, antique items, gourmet food and artwork. Tickets cost $50 and are on sale in the Courthouse Museum gift shop. Proceeds benefit museum programs and the Bill and Tom Kirby Agricultural Scholarship at Merced College. For more information, call the museum office at 209-723-2401.

Atwater Class of 1980 reunion

Atwater High Class of 1980 will have its 35-year reunion Sept. 5 at Isabella’s Bar & Grill in Atwater. The dinner-dance party begins at 6 p.m. with no-host cocktails; dinner is at 7. Merced High Class of 1980 reunion

The Merced High School 1980 Class Reunion – 35th Anniversary will be held 6 to 11 p.m. Sept. 19 outdoors under the stars at Vista Ranch and Cellars, 7326 E. State Route 140. A casual event, the price is $12 per person and includes use of the venue, music and all amenities of the venue. There will be a no-host bar and no-host dinner. Support group for families with special-needs children

Challenged Family Resource Center support group for families who have children with disabilities meets from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on the last Wednesday of each month. Meetings are held at 827 W. 20th St. in Merced. A children’s play group is offered at the same location from 11 a.m. to noon every Tuesday. For more information, call 209-385-5314.
