Merced Sun-Star business awards

The Merced Sun-Star has launched a new program aimed at recognizing the community’s best businesses and their owners. The Excellence in Business program will grant eight awards to area businesses, and one person in the community will receive the Hall of Fame award. Winners will be announced July 29 in the Sun-Star. To nominate a business or a person, click here. The deadline to submit nominations is Thursday.

Parkinson’s support group

The Mission Gardens Parkinson’s Support Group meets at 10 a.m. Thursday at 1450 E. 27th St. The featured speaker will be Isabel Nuno, a senior services program worker, who will address the four parts of Medicare and information about the Area Agency on Aging. ‘Minions’ fun

Become a certified “Minion” and attend Villain-Con in at 7 p.m. Friday at Barnes and Noble, 1720 W Olive Ave., to help search for the most despicable villain to follow. Activities and giveaways round out the fun. For more information or to sign up, call 209-386-0571.

Pancake breakfast

Pancakes will be served from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Merced Elks Park, 3600 Wardrobe Ave. Breakfast includes pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, fruit, orange juice and coffee. Bloody marys and screwdrivers are also available. A donation of $6 for adults, $3 for children helps Merced Elks Park’s Merced-area charities and scholarships. ‘Cooking Matters’

The Merced recreation and Merced County public health departments will be offering a second session of “Cooking Matters” from 9 to 10:30 a.m. July 21, 23, 28 and 30 at the Senior Community Center, 755 W. 15th St. The class, which focuses on preparing healthy and simple snacks and meals that kids can make at home on their own, is open to kids going into seventh, eighth and ninth grades. Participation is free, and space is limited. To reserve a spot, call 209-385-6298.

Tax credit workshop

The Merced County Department of Community and Economic Development is hosting a workshop July 24 on the California Competes Tax Credit to highlight how businesses can apply for tax credits. The workshop will be from 9 to10:30 a.m. at the Castle Airport Conference Center, 1900 Airdrome Entry in Atwater. It is free to businesses of all sizes. Prop. 47 information

The Merced Organizing Project will host a Proposition 47 information session and reclassification clinic from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 25 at 7081 N. Winton Way in Winton. The event, a collaboration with the Merced County Public Defender’s Office and Lifeline CDC, will educate people on Proposition 47 (the Reduced Penalties for Some Crimes Initiative) and help individuals with the application process.
