‘Minions’ fun
Become a certified “Minion” and attend Villain-Con in at 7 p.m. Friday at Barnes and Noble, 1720 W Olive Ave., to help search for the most despicable villain to follow. Activities and giveaways round out the fun. For more information or to sign up, call 209-386-0571.
Pancake breakfast
Pancakes will be served from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Merced Elks Park, 3600 Wardrobe Ave. Breakfast includes pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, fruit, orange juice and coffee. Bloody marys and screwdrivers are also available. A donation of $6 for adults, $3 for children helps Merced Elks Park’s Merced-area charities and scholarships. ‘Cooking Matters’
The Merced recreation and Merced County public health departments will be offering a second session of “Cooking Matters” from 9 to 10:30 a.m. July 21, 23, 28 and 30 at the Senior Community Center, 755 W. 15th St. The class, which focuses on preparing healthy and simple snacks and meals that kids can make at home on their own, is open to kids going into seventh, eighth and ninth grades. Participation is free, and space is limited. To reserve a spot, call 209-385-6298.
Tax credit workshop
The Merced County Department of Community and Economic Development is hosting a workshop July 24 on the California Competes Tax Credit to highlight how businesses can apply for tax credits. The workshop will be from 9 to10:30 a.m. at the Castle Airport Conference Center, 1900 Airdrome Entry in Atwater. It is free to businesses of all sizes. Prop. 47 information
The Merced Organizing Project will host a Proposition 47 information session and reclassification clinic from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 25 at 7081 N. Winton Way in Winton. The event, a collaboration with the Merced County Public Defender’s Office and Lifeline CDC, will educate people on Proposition 47 (the Reduced Penalties for Some Crimes Initiative) and help individuals with the application process. Story hour
The Rotary Club Wee Wigglers story hour is at 10 a.m. every Thursday at the public library in Los Banos, and the Cesar Chavez Committee’s Lectura para Niños is at 10 a.m. Saturdays. The library has Wi-Fi and 3M cloud technology available. The Summer Reading Program continues through Aug. 8. It is not too late to sign up to read books and receive prizes. All children are welcome and adults can also be part of the program.
Toastmasters meetings
Talk Show Toastmasters 7302 meets at 6 p.m. every Wednesday at the International House of Pancakes, 455 W. Olive Ave. The education program of Toastmasters International focuses on five core competencies: public speaking, interpersonal communication, leading and managing, leading strategically and building confidence.
