AARP day trip
AARP Merced Chapter 282 is planning a day trip to Roaring Camp Railroads on Aug. 11. There will be a narrated excursion on a 100-year-old steam train to Bear Mountain. The cost of the trip is $65 and open to the public. The train and bus will be wheelchair-accessible. Seating is limited; the deadline for reservations is Monday. Health fair
Castle Family Health Centers will hold its eighth annual Summer Family Health Festival from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 3605 Hospital Road in Atwater; admission is free. The event offers free health screenings for vision, hearing, diabetes and blood pressure, as well as breast exams and dental for children. Sports physicals are $25 each and can be obtained Monday through Saturday; call 209-381-2027. Farewell open house in Atwater
An open-house farewell will be held for Sister Thomas Marie Heavey from 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 15 at St. Anthony Parish Hall and school buildings, 1801 Winton Way in Atwater. Heavey, who has served as a religious education director for many years in the Merced area, will soon be transferred to the Franciscan Retreat House in Washington, D.C. Harvest of Hope charitable dinner
Catholic Charities Merced will host its first Harvest of Hope event Aug. 28 at St. Patrick’s Parish, 671 E. Yosemite Ave. No-host cocktails will be at 6 p.m. followed by a barbecue dinner at 7 p.m. The event will raise funds to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless and other causes.
