Exhibit reception at arts center
A free reception for the exhibit “Enlightened Perspectives: Interdisciplinary Art - A Mixed Media Show” will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at the Merced County Arts Center, 645 W. Main St. The exhibit showcases the collaborative work of UC Merced science researchers and local artists. Refreshments and snacks will be served. The exhibit runs through Sept. 29.
Barbecue Cook-Off at Club Mercedes
Club Mercedes will hold its second annual Barbecue Rib Cook-Off on Saturday at 569 W. Ninth St. Doors open at noon. Cover charge is $5 per person, 21 and older. Food and beverages will be available for an extra charge. Music will be provided by D.J. Farewell open house at St. Anthony
An open-house farewell will be held for Sister Thomas Marie Heavey from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at St. Anthony Parish Hall and school buildings, 1801 Winton Way in Atwater. Heavey, who has served as a religious education director for many years in the Merced area, will soon be transferred to the Franciscan Retreat House in Washington, D.C. Syrian conflict lecture at church
The Creekside Church of Merced will host an event about a persecuted church in Syria. The speakers will be the Rev. Nerses Balabanian and his wife, Sevan, who grew up and have served in Syria and Lebanon. They will speak about their recent visit to the Middle East and share stories of persecution from the Islamic State group and the conflict in Syria. The free event is at 7 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Creekside Evangelical Free Church, 2876 G St.
Hot August Nights Bunco fundraiser
The Wesley Foundation will host its Hot August Nights Bunco at 3 p.m. Aug. 30 at Wesley Hall United Methodist Church, 899 Yosemite Parkway. The event supports the foundation, a Christian fellowship for college students. Admission is $10 and provides for fun and snacks. There will be prizes awarded for the top point earners as well as for the biggest loser, but no cash prizes. For tickets and more information, call 209-723-9007.
Le Grand High Class of ’65 reunion
The reunion committee for the Le Grand High School Class of 1965 is trying to contact classmates who would be interested in attending a 50th class reunion. The gathering is planned for Oct. 10. For more information, call 209-723-8180.
Merced High Class of ’65 reunion
The Merced High School Class of 1965 will hold its 50th reunion at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Branding Iron Restaurant, 640. W. 16th St. There will be a no-host bar and dinner. The cost is $35. For more information, contact Linda Boyer Roland at croland@prodigy.net or 209-383-3312.
