Aikido classes at Merced College

Merced College Community Services will be offering aikido classes beginning Sept. 1 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesdays & Thursdays through Oct. 29. The cost is $65 per participant. For more information, call 209-384-6224 or email communitysvc@mccd.edu.

UC Merced 5K to support scholarships

The UC Merced Alumni Association and Athletics and Recreation will host the inaugural UC Merced Journey 5K Fund Run on Saturday to celebrate the campus’ 10th anniversary. The event begins at 9 a.m., and parking is free. Students, staff and faculty members, alumni and community members are invited to participate. All proceeds from the run will support student scholarships. The goal is to raise $2,500, which will be matched 3-to-1. Registration for the 5K is $10; children ages 10 and under are free. Storytime at Barnes & Noble Merced

Barnes & Noble will host a Storytime for Kids event at 11 a.m. Saturdayat its Merced location, 1720 W. Olive Ave. Children can hear the story, “The Full Moon at the Napping House,” by Audrey and Don Wood. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 209-386-0571.

Maxxlimit Cars & Burgers Los Banos Car Show

The fifth annual Maxxlimit Cars & Burgers Los Banos Car Show will be held Sunday at the Les Schwab Tire Center parking lot, 1500 E. Pacheco Blvd. in Los Banos. Registration begins at 10 a.m., judging starts at 1 p.m. and awards will be announced at 3 p.m. The entry fee is $25. Vendor space is available for $39. Sheriff to speak to Republican women’s group

Merced County Sheriff Vern Warnke will address the Merced County Republican women’s group at a lunch meeting beginning at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 21 at the Branding Iron, 640 W. 16th St. in Merced. Reservations must be made by Sept. 17 and can be made by calling 209-812-4398 or 209-761-0550.

Become an adult literacy tutor

You can make a difference in lives by volunteering as a literacy tutor in the Merced Library’s Read and Succeed-Merced adult literacy program. An informational orientation will be held 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 22 at the Merced Library, 2100 O St., Merced. A tutor training session follows from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sept. 26. Orientation is a prerequisite to training. Sessions are free. Participants must be 18 or older. Reservation required. Call the Literacy Room at 209-385-7391.
