Daughters of the American Revolution

The Merced River Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will meet at 10:30 a.m. today at the Hampshire House on R St. and Donna Ave. If you can prove lineage from a Revolutionary War patriot, you are eligible for membership. Pet adoption event

The Merced County Humane Society will hold an adoption event from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 11-13 at PetSmart, 1196 W. Olive Ave. Lots of rescued dogs, puppies, cats and kittens will be available for adoption. Volunteers are welcome. For more information, email mchs324@gmail.com.

HSA volunteer training

The Merced County Human Services Agency will host a training session for its volunteer program at 9 a.m. Sept. 12 at the Living Well Cafe, 851 W. 23rd St. The agency is looking for volunteers for services such as its senior companion program, child abuse treatment program and foster youth programs. Officials are looking to add to its group of 15 volunteers. People must register before attending the training later this month. To register, call Janet Kasper at 209-354-2525.

La Grange Odd Fellow breakfast

The La Grange Odd Fellows will host breakfast on the second Sunday of each month. The next meal is set for 7 to 11 a.m. Sept. 13 at the IOOF Hall, 30018 Yosemite Blvd. in La Grange. The menu includes biscuits and gravy, sausage, ham-and-cheese omelets and French toast. The cost is $6. Complimentary coffee and orange juice round out the meal. Square dance lessons

The Boots and Slippers Square Dance Club is presenting a new round of square dance lessons. The first meeting will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Stratford Evans Hall, 490 B St. The first three lessons are free. Travel tour slideshow

Merced College Community Services will be hosting a slideshow for the upcoming Collette Travel Tours from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Sept. 15. RSVP by calling 209-384-6224.

Genealogical Society meeting

Janice Sellers, editor of three genealogy journals, will address the Merced County Genealogical Society at 1 p.m., Sept. 19 in the Gracey Room of the Merced County Library, 2100 O St. The meeting is open to all.

El Nido School’s 100th celebration

El Nido School’s centenial celebration will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 26 at El Nido School, 161 E. El Nido Road. All are invited to attend. There will be a catered tri-tip and chicken lunch. The cost is $18 for adults, $8 for children ages 5 to 7. Children younger than 5 receive free admission. RSVP by Thursday. Black Oak Casino bus trip

The Native Daughters of the Golden West will sponsor their fall bus trip to Black Oak Casino on Oct. 17. The bus departs at 8:15 a.m. from Wal Mart parking lot, 3055 Loughborough Drive. The cost is $25 per person. For reservations or more information, call 209-724-9617.
