Human-trafficking awareness event

Debbie Johnson will speak during a human rights celebration sponsored by Church Women United at 7 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, 500 Buena Vista Drive in Merced. The event seeks to educate and alert students, youth leaders, parents, teachers to help rescue young people from human trafficking. For more information, call 209-769-1884.

Storytime at Barnes & Noble Merced

Barnes & Noble will host a Storytime for Kids event at 11 a.m. Saturday at its Merced location, 1720 W. Olive Ave. Children can hear the story “Llama Llama Gram and Grandpa,” by Anna Dewdney. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 209-386-0571.

Golf for All Ages

Merced College Community Services will be offering Golf for All Ages beginning Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m., Saturdays through Oct. 3. The cost is $55 per participant plus range fees. For more information, call 209-384-6224 or email communitysvc@mccd.edu.

HSA volunteer training in Merced

The Merced County Human Services Agency will host a training session for its volunteer program at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Living Well Cafe on 851 W. 23rd St. in Merced. The agency is looking for volunteers for services such as its senior companion program, child abuse treatment program and foster youth programs, among others. Club Mercedes’ menudo Sundays

Club Mercedes will serve menudo every Sunday starting Sept. 13 and throughout the football season. Serving time runs 8 a.m. to noon or when the menudo runs out. Baby bowls are $4, small bowls $8, and large bowls $9. Quesadillas $1.50, Bloody Mary specials $5. Prices include coffee, condiments and pastry. Club Mercedes is at 569 W. Ninth St. in Merced. La Grange Odd Fellows breakfast Sunday

The La Grange Odd Fellows will host breakfast on the second Sunday of each month. The next meal is set for 7 to 11 a.m. Sunday at the IOOF Hall, 30018 Yosemite Blvd. in La Grange. The menu includes biscuits and gravy, sausage, ham-and-cheese omelets and French toast. The cost is $6. Complimentary coffee and orange juice round out the meal. Merced Sierra Club meeting

Ron Stork of Friends of the River will speak at the Merced Sierra Club meeting at 7 p.m. Sept. 17. The public is invited to learn about the Twin Tunnels, Temperance Flat Dam, relicensing the dams of the Merced River, and more. ‘Light Up the Lantern’ for at-risk youths

The UC Merced Police Department is set to host its annual “Light Up the Lantern” event Sept. 19 to support the campus Police Mentor Program. The program benefits 200 Merced fourth-grade students and operates solely on grant and private funding. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. in the solar breezeway of the Science and Engineering Building 2 with a reception and silent auction. A dinner and live auction begin at 6:30 p.m. The price is $40 per person. Sponsorship opportunities are available. Reserve at giving.ucmerced.edu/LUTL-2015. El Nido School’s 100th celebration

El Nido School’s centennial celebration will be held 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 26 at El Nido School, 161 E. El Nido Road. All are invited to attend. Event featured catered tri-tip and chicken lunch.
