Pet Adoption Event
The Merced County Humane Society will be having an adoption event at PetSmart, 1196 W. Olive Ave. from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today, Saturday and Sunday. Rescued dogs and cats will be available for adoption. Volunteers are welcome. For more information, email mchs324@gmail.com.
Barnes & Noble Storytime for Kids
Barnes & Noble will host a Storytime for Kids event at 11 a.m. Saturday at 1720 W. Olive Ave. Children can hear the story “Llama Llama Gram and Grandpa,” by Anna Dewdney. The event is free. For more information, call 209-386-0571.
Club Mercedes menudo Sundays
Club Mercedes will serve menudo every Sunday starting this weekend and throughout the football season. Serving time runs 8 a.m. to noon or when the menudo runs out, whichever comes first. Baby bowls are $4, small bowls $8 and large bowls $9. Quesadillas are $1.50. Bloody mary are $5. Prices include coffee, condiments and pastry. Club Mercedes is located at 569 W. Martinez Quartet concert
Spend a Sunday afternoon listening to the Martinez Quartet play music from the big-band era. This toe-tapping afternoon will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday in the Merced Multicultural Arts Center, 645 W. Atwater Community Cat Network film
The Atwater Community Cat Network, a trap-neuter-return program for feral cats in Atwater, will host a screening of the award-winning film “Redemption” at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Atwater VFW, 1388 Broadway Ave. in Atwater. The film, by no-kill coalition founder Nathan Winograd, is about the no-kill movement. A $5 donation would be appreciated. For more information call 209-683-3623.
Beers and Brats dinner at Fruit Barn
Merced Mayor Pro Tem Josh Pedrozo will host his annual Beers and Brats dinner 5:30 p.m. Sept. 17 at the Merced Fruit Barn, 4526 E. Highway 140. All-you-can-eat sausages, Portuguese beans, rolls, salad and beverages will be served for $10 per person. Takeout will be available.
Breakfast at the zoo
Visitors to Applegate Park Zoo can enjoy a complete pancake, scrambled eggs and sausage breakfast in the Rossotti Ed-Zoo-Cation Center before seeing the animals on exhibit in the zoo from 8 to 11 a.m. Sept. 19. Tickets can be purchased in the zoo gift shop or by calling 209-756-4014. All proceeds from the event, sponsored by the Merced Zoological Society, will benefit zoo programs.
Day With Wildlife
The Stanislaus Wildlife Care Center celebrates its 31st anniversary with a free Day With Wildlife. Raffle items can be found at www.stanislauswildlife.org. Day with Wildlife will be from10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 19 at the center, inside Fox Grove Fishing Access, 1220 Geer Road, Hughson.
Master Gardener orientation classes
The Master Gardeners of Merced County will hold orientation meetings about the Master Gardener program and the next volunteer training class, which starts in January. Master Gardener volunteers are trained by the University of California Cooperative Extension Office to educate and advise home gardeners on problems, pests, and general plant and garden culture. The first orientation is from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 23 at the City Council Chambers, 1416 C St., Livingston. AARP meeting and barbecue
The AARP Merced monthly meeting will be 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 23 at the Merced Senior Community Center, 755 W. 15th St. After the business meeting, the annual barbecue will be held. Entrees include a choice of hot dogs, chicken breasts or pulled pork sandwiches. Also included are beans, potato salad, coleslaw, a roll and ice cream. Prices range from $5 to $10, depending on choice of entree. A two-entree combo plate is $10. Takeout meals will be available. Atwater High Homecoming Parade
The Atwater High School homecoming parade will be at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 2. at Fosters Freeze, 1401 Winton Way, and will end at Atwater High School, 2201 Fruitland Ave. School officials invite car clubs, local businesses or any other organization to join the festivities.
