Merced Sierra Club meeting

Ron Stork of Friends of the River will speak at the Merced Sierra Club meeting at 7 tonight. The public is invited to learn about the Twin Tunnels, Temperance Flat Dam, relicensing the dams of the Merced River, and more. Canned-food drive for fire victims

Because of the fires throughout California, many are being forced to leave their homes. Local schools are coming together to collect nonperishable food items through Friday. Donations can be made at any of these collection sites during school hours: Stone Ridge Christian High School, Providence Christian School, St. Paul’s Christian School, St. Anthony’s Catholic School, Plainsburg Elementary School and Crossroads Christian School. VFW karaoke night

The Atwater chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will host a karaoke night from 7 to 10 p.m. Sept. 25 at 1390 Broadway Ave. in Atwater.

Merced County Humane Society adoption events

Merced County Humane Society has adoptions from noon to 4 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday at Petsmart, 1196 W. Olive Ave. in Merced. Puppies, kittens, dogs and cats raised in foster homes are ready to find forever homes. For more information, email mchs324@gmail.com.

Master Gardener orientation classes

The Master Gardeners of Merced County will hold orientation meetings about the Master Gardener program and the next volunteer training class, which starts in January. Master Gardener volunteers are trained by University of California Cooperative Extension Office to educate and advise home gardeners on problems, pests and general plant and garden culture. The first orientation is from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 23 at the City Council Chambers, 1416 C St. in Livingston. World dance classes

Stephan Gray Memorial Golf Tournament

The 10th annual Stephan Gray Memorial Fund/Merced Police Officers Association Golf Tournament tees off at 8 a.m. Sept. 26 at Rancho Del Rey Golf Club, 5250 Green Sands Ave. in Atwater. The cost is $100 per person. Sponsorships are available for $100 and $250. For more information, call 209-756-2422.

Pedal Merced event gearing up

United Way’s eighth annual Pedal Merced Family Bicycle Fest will be held Oct. 11 at Merced High School. Registration is open. Applications are available online at www.Pedalmerced.org or at the United Way office, 658 W. Main St. in Merced. Pedal Merced is a 10-mile ride along the bicycle path of Merced and includes a free barbecue lunch, games and prizes, community booths and raffles. For more information, call 209-383-4242.
