Merced College industrial program

Sober Fest coming to Merced

A drug and alcohol awareness, prevention and recovery event is planned for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Applegate Park, 1045 W. 25th St. in Merced. The event will be hosted by the Merced County Sheriff’s Department, Probation Department and BI Incorporated. Sober Fest 2015 will feature testimonials from sober community members, including Merced County Day Reporting Center participants, as well as booths from community providers including Rescue Mission, Worknet, Merced County Mental Health and more. The event also will feature family-friendly activities including face painting, a motorcycle show, a bounce house, live bands and a DJ, and a raffle and prizes. Food vendors will be present.

Annual Livingston Sweet Potato Festival

The city of Livingston will hosts its annual Sweet Potato Festival on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to celebrate the sweet potato harvest at the Max Foster Sports Complex, 2600 Walnut Ave. in Livingston. The Recreation Department is looking for vendors and volunteers to help with this year’s event. Discount carnival tickets are on sale at City Hall until 5 p.m. Thursday. Storytime at Barnes & Noble Merced

Barnes & Noble will host a Storytime for Kids event at 11 a.m. Saturday at its Merced location, 1720 W. Olive Ave. Children can hear the story, “We’re in the Wrong Book,” by Richard Byrne. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 209-386-0571.

La Grange Odd Fellows

The Odd Fellows of LaFayette Lodge 65 plan three events in October at the La Grange IOOF Hall, 30018 Yosemite Blvd. A spaghetti dinner and raffle is 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday. Food is $10 for adult and $5 for children younger than 12. A breakfast is planned 7 to 11 a.m. Oct. 11. That meal is $6. Another breakfast is 6 to 10 a.m. Oct. 17, and is also $6. Harvest of Quilts event in Merced

The Merced Gateway Quilters Guild will host its Harvest of Quilts from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Merced County Fairground Pavilion. Some items will be for sale or may be won through a boutique raffle. Activities for adults and children, including a treasure hunt for children, will be available. A lunch including a potato bar, salad and pie will be served along with drinks and desserts. Adult tickets are $7, and children 12 and under who are accompanied by an adult with a ticket are free. Mariposa Farm Bureau fundraiser

The Mariposa Farm Bureau will be holding its annual fundraiser ribeye steak dinner Oct. 10 at Mariposa County Fairground Building A, 5007 Fairground Road in Mariposa. The doors will open at 5 p.m. for social hour with a hosted bar, and dinner will be served at 6:30. Tickets are $35 per person or $250 for a table for eight. Children under 5 are free. Merced Cancer Center’s support group

Merced Cancer Center will host support groups the first Wednesday of each month from 5:30 to 7 p.m. People tend to feel more comfortable sharing their experiences and getting their feelings out in the open with others who have experienced similar situations.
