UC Merced chancellor to talk in Modesto

The Business Women’s Symposium will present insights, inspiration and motivational ideas from successful business and educational leaders addressing core topics that impact every businessperson today. The event runs from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at 953 10th St., Modesto. The cost is $20 and includes a breakfast buffet, raffle entry and swag bag. Keynote speakers for the nearly sold-out event are Gallo Center for the Arts CEO Lynn Dickerson and UC Merced Chancellor Dorothy Leland. Missing aircraft mystery explored

Castle Air Museum will host a slide-show presentation by Tony Krizan, who has searched Kings Canyon for an aircraft that crashed 74 years ago. The show includes images and stories from Krizan’s hiking adventures into the wilderness to locate a lone Curtiss-Wright P-40 Tomahawk aircraft. The lecture will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Banquet Room at Castle Air Museum, 5050 Santa Fe Drive in Atwater. There is no admission cost. For more information, call 209-723-2178.

Family story time

Merced County Library will be presenting a family story time starting at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Story time is a half hour of story, rhymes, songs and more. The program is free, for more information, call the library at 209-385-7643.

Story time at Barnes & Noble Merced

Barnes & Noble will host a Storytime for Kids at 11 a.m. Saturday at 1720 W. Olive Ave. Children will hear “Rosie Revere, Engineer” and “Iggy Peck, Architect,” by Andrea Beaty. The event is free. For more information, call 209-386-0571.

Pancake breakfast for GVHS

Kiwanis is partnering with Golden Valley High School tennis and soccer to host a pancake breakfast fundraiser at the GVHS cafeteria from 7 a.m. to noon Sunday. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased at the door or from one of the athletes. For more information, call 209-631-4941.

Crane Day at Wildlife Refuge

The Merced National Wildlife Refuge is inviting the public to participate in Crane Day birdwatching tours Nov. 14. The guided tours will be on buses traveling around the refuge to view the thousands of sandhill cranes and other wildlife that make the refuge their winter home. The refuge is at 7430 W. Sandy Mush Road. Meet at the front entrance kiosk. Tours will occur from 8 and 10 a.m. Space is limited, so call 209-826-3508 to reserve a spot. This event is free and open to all ages.

Merced County Republican Women’s Meeting

The next Merced County Republican Women’s meeting is set for 11:30 a.m. Nov. 16 at the Branding Iron, 640 W. 16th St. in Merced. The speaker will be AARP insurance agent Chuck Meyers, who is expected to answer questions about the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and changes to Medicare. Merced College Retired Women Luncheon
