Veterans tribute program

Forever Free, presented by the Fremont Honor Choir, involves 60 students from fourth to sixth grades from Fremont Elementary. They will share this program with the veterans of the Merced area. The free program is set for 6 p.m. Thursday, at the Merced Legion Hall, 939 West Main St. For more information, call 209-947-3673.

Wrestling with Hunger event

Lucha Xtreme will host the “Wrestling with Hunger” event in Merced on Saturday along with a canned-food drive for families in need. The event, held at American Legion Post 83 on Main Street, will feature wrestlers such as Al Azar, El Guerrero de la Muerte, Jesse “The Snake” Poole, Mortal, Manny “Raging Bull” Fernandez and the Texas Hitmen. The event is free, and seats are first-come, first-served. Those who attend are encouraged to make a canned-food donation. Storytime at Barnes & Noble Merced

Barnes & Noble will host a Storytime for Kids event at 11 a.m. Saturday at its Merced location, 1720 W. Olive Ave. Children will hear “The Little Kids’ Table.” The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 209-386-0571.

SPCA seeking homes for pets

The Merced Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is in need of foster families for some of the cats and dogs in the no-kill animal shelter. Grown dogs and cats as well as puppies and kittens are available for adoption. Call the shelter at 209-384-7722 or 209-761-7174 and ask for Leslie. Orientation on fostering will be given. SPCA is also in need of clumping litter. Call the shelter at 209-723-2574 and ask for Florence. If the litter can’t be dropped off, SPCA members can pick it up.

Mature-driver improvement class

The Merced College noncredit program is offering a mature-driver improvement class in December. Many insurance companies offer discounts to drivers 50 and older who complete this course. There is no registration fee for this class. The first class runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 4 at the Merced Education Center. Call the Continuing Education Office at 209-381-6540 to preregister.

Santa’s pancake breakfast

The Gauchos Diamond Club Boosters will host a pancake breakfast with Santa to help raise money for El Capitan High School baseball. The breakfast will include pancakes, sausage, fruit, coffee, orange juice and pictures with Santa. Cost is $5 per plate. The breakfast will be from 8-11 a.m. Dec. 12 at the El Capitan cafeteria, 100 Farmland Ave. in Merced. For more information, contact coach Aaron Ruiz at 209-631-7606 or aruiz@muhsd.org.

Indoor youth soccer

The city of Merced’s Recreation Department and the Indoor Sports Center will be offering indoor youth soccer on Saturdays from Jan. 9 until Feb. 27. The program is for children ages 3 to 10, and will take place at the Indoor Sports Center. The cost is $45 plus an additional $10 for the uniform. Registration deadline is Dec. 4. Register at 1033 West Main St. or call 209-385-6298 for more information.
