Elks Hoops
The Elks National Foundation will hold its free-throw contest for boys and girls ages 8 to 13 at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Boys & Girls Club, 615 W. 15th St. The age of competitors will be determined by their age as of April 1, 2016. For more information, call Janet Appling-Kasper at 209-756-8897.
Donations sought for foster children
The Merced County Foster Parents Association is collecting gifts for children living with foster families because of abuse or neglect. Gifts of toys, clothing, disposable diapers and canned goods are needed. The association will present gifts to children from infants to age 18 at its Christmas party Saturday. Holiday bake sale
New Beginnings for Merced County Animals is having its third annual Holiday Bake Sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The sale will take place at Christina’s Fine Clothing, 2852 G Street, at the Bear Creek Galleria. Money raised through the baked goodies and raffle will benefit animals in need. Nutrition and physical activity workshop
The Merced Soccer Academy will organize a nutrition and physical activity workshop from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Stephen Leonard Park, 640 T Street. The workshop will teach families how to make healthier food choices. The workshop will be available in English and Spanish.
Toys for Tots
The U.S. Marine Corps, with help from American Legion Riders Chapter 83, is collecting new and unwrapped toys to help local children. Each donor who bring a toy will receive a free meal from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the American Legion building, 939 W. Main St. A hamburger, potato salad and baked beans also may be purchased for $6. For more information, call Linda Perry at 209-769-8499.
