Actions for Climate Justice
The local group of the Actions for Climate Justice movement is gathering rain or shine in solidarity with a day of global mass mobilization marches today at 1 p.m. at 2222 M St. Organizers will demand an end of the fossil-fuel era and a just transition to renewable energy. People are encouraged to wear red to recognize those who have lost their lives to climate change, war and terror.
Elks hoops
The Elks National Foundation holds its free-throw contest for boys and girls ages 8 to 13 today at 10 a.m. at the Boys & Girls Club, 615 W. 15th St. Age of competitors is determined by their age as of April 1, 2016. For more information, call Janet Appling-Kasper at 209-756-8897.
Merced Art Bazaar
The Merced Art Bazaar will take place Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Bazaar is a pop-up market that will feature the works of a diverse cross section of local artists, artisans, musicians, bakers, crafters and more. The event will be hosted at Vault Works, 1666 N St. (at Main Street). Live music and food will round out an eclectic and inventive shopping experience.
Toys for Tots
The U.S Marine Corps, with help from the American Legion Riders Chapter No. 83, is collecting new and unwrapped toys to help local children. Donors who bring a toy will receive a free meal on Tuesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The meal – which consists of a hamburger, potato salad and baked beans, and also may be purchased for $6 – will be served at the American Legion Building, 939 W. Classes on mental illness
Family-to-Family Education weekly classes will be offered beginning Jan. 7 at 480 E. 13th St. from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The National Alliance on Mental Illness’ Family-to-Family Education Program is a 12-week course for family members of individuals with severe brain disorders including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, clinical depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Instruction and course materials are free to class participants. The course discusses the clinical treatment of these illnesses and teaches the knowledge and skills family members need to cope more effectively.
