Rose Pruning Workshop
Merced Gardens and Nursery will host a free session on rose pruning on Jan. 16 at 11 a.m. This informative session will be held in the nursery's Rose Garden section. Staff will demonstrate how to prune all types of roses and discuss yearlong care to guarantee beautiful blooms. Q&A session to follow. Refreshments will be served. Courthouse Museum Docent Training
The Merced County Courthouse Museum is recruiting new volunteers. Docents serve as tour guides for visitors to the Courthouse Museum and help to educate the public about Merced County history. An annual docent training session is scheduled on Jan. 16 at 10 a.m. at the Courthouse Museum. Coffee and breakfast rolls will be provided. Make your reservation by calling the museum office at 209-723-2401. The museum is located on 21st and N Streets.
Be A Voice for a Child
CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Merced County will be training a new group of trainees beginning Jan 20. Volunteers advocate for the best interest of children who have been abused and neglected. Call 209-722-2272 for information about how to help a child.
Merced AARP Meeting
The first monthly meeting and social of the year for Merced Chapter 282 AARP will be held Jan. 20 at 10 a.m. at the Merced Senior Center on 15th Street. Playhouse Merced will put on a program which promises to be entertaining and informative. All current members of AARP are urged to attend and bring a guest.
Climb Your Family Tree
Learn how to trace your roots at the annual program for beginners. Get started with a free packet of materials, forms and tips to help you find your ancestors – at the Merced County Genealogical Society meeting in the Gracey Room, Merced County Library, 2100 O St., at 1:30 p.m. on Jan 23. The meeting is open to all, no membership is required.
Atwater High Band Luau Fundraiser
The Atwater High Band Boosters’ annual Luau is on Jan. 29. The Luau will take place at 6 p.m. at the Gateway Gardens event center. Dinner will include Hawaiian pork, chicken, salad, rice, pineapple and a roll. The band will not have a fireworks booth this year, so the community is asked to help now. Tickets are $20 per person.
