Rivera Elementary book drive

The Merced High School Associated Student Body will be having a book drive for the new Rivera Elementary School. Children’s book donations will be accepted beginning Tuesday, and the books will be delivered to Rivera Elementary in March. New or gently used children’s book donations (reading levels K-6) are needed.

SPCA adoption event

The Merced Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will be holding an adoption event from noon to 3 p.m. Jan. 30 at the Petco in Atwater, 1230 Commerce Ave. Shelter animals will be available for pre-adoption that day. There will also be information regarding volunteering, becoming a foster parent and becoming a member of the organization. Merced SPCA’s no-kill shelter is at 1021 E. Child’s Ave., Merced, and is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. The public is encouraged to come and visit the adoptable dogs, puppies, cats and kittens. You may also follow Merced SPCA on Facebook at “SPCA Merced” or go to its website, which features information on all their adoptable pets, at www.mercedspca.com.

Eat Dessert First

Merced United Methodist Church will host an Eat Dessert First fundraiser from 3 to 5 p.m. Jan. 31 at the church’s Wesley Hall, 899 Yosemite Parkway. There will be tastings of all kinds of sweet goodies as well as a large variety of fruit, cheese, sugarless samples, nuts, savory appetizers and a chocolate fountain. This fundraiser is sponsored by Wesley Foundation Merced Campus Ministry. A donation of $10 is suggested. For tickets, call 209-722-6327.

Humane Society adoption event

Looking for a new Best Friend? Local pet rescue Merced County Humane Society will be at the Merced PetSmart, 1196 W. Olive Ave., on Jan. 30-31, and again on Feb. 6-7. Puppies, kittens, dogs,and cats are ready to find forever homes. Come down to adopt, visit or volunteer from noon to 4 p.m. For more information, email mchs324@gmail.com.

Play Group

The Challenged Family Resource Center has its weekly Play Group every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to noon for children up to age 5. The center, at 827 W. 29th St., also has a support group for parents who have children with special needs on the last Wednesday of each month. For more information, call 209-384-0119.
