Autism support group

The Challenged Family Resource Center is hosting a support group for parents of autistic children from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday. For more information, call 209-385-5314.

Merced Sunday Dance

Gloria and Friends present Merced Sunday Dance from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at 755 W. 15th St (in the ballroom of the Merced Senior Community Center). Cost is $8. Refreshments and door prizes will be available. For more information, call 209-723-0839 or 209-628-8734.

Atwater High band luau fundraiser

The Atwater High School Band Boosters’ annual luau will take place at 6 p.m. Jan. 29 at the Gateway Gardens event center. Dinner will include Hawaiian pork, chicken, salad, rice, pineapple and a roll. The band will not have a fireworks booth this year, so the community is asked to help now. Tickets are $20 per person. Friends of the Library meeting

The Friends of the Merced County Library will hold its winter meeting at 5 p.m. Feb. 4 in the library’s Gracey Room, 2100 O St. The public is welcome. Come find out what exciting things are coming up at the library.

Singing valentines

The Golden Valley Men's Barbershop Chorus is offering singing valentines for the 30th year in the Merced and Atwater areas. A barbershop quartet will sing a romantic song, present a card, a silk rose and take a digital photo of the recipient with the quartet. To make reservations for Feb. 12, 13 or 14, call 209-383-3808. Cost is $40; $45 if by credit card.

United for Life speech contest

High school students are invited to show their passion for the cause of life by competing in the annual speech contest sponsored by United for Life of Merced County. Freshman through seniors are encouraged to compete for cash prizes. Seniors also have the opportunity to move to the state competition. Big Red One reunion

Veterans of the Army’s renowned 1st Infantry Division, the “Big Red One,” will hold their annual 98th reunion in Atlanta. The reunion will be June 8-11 at the Hilton Atlanta. Veterans now living in the Central Valley who served in the 1st Infantry Division or any unit attached to it are cordially invited to attend.
