Parent/Student Orientation for 8th-graders at Merced High

Merced High School will have an Eighth Grade Parent/Student Orientation at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the school gym. This is the first opportunity for parents and students to meet counselors, teachers and coaches, as well as receive important information about transitioning to high school. Parents are asked to bring the course selection and enrollment forms that will be given to students this week. The course catalog, which provides specifics on classes, may be found on the high school’s website. For more information, call 209-385-6495.

AARP meeting

The first monthly meeting and sociaI of the year for Merced Chapter 282 AARP will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Merced Senior Center on 15th Street. NewIy elected President Ray Young will officiate. PIayhouse Merced will put on a program that promises to be entertaining and informative. Complimentary refreshments will be served. All current AARP members are urged to attend and bring a guest.

SPCA adoption event in Atwater

The Merced Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will hold an adoption event from noon to 3 p.m. Jan. 30 at the Petco store in Atwater, 1230 Commerce Ave. Shelter animals will be available for pre-adoption that day. There also will be information regarding volunteering, becoming a foster parent and becoming a member of the organization. Merced SPCA’s no-kill shelter is at 1021 E. Childs Ave. and is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. The public is encouraged to visit the adoptable dogs and cats. You also may follow Merced SPCA on Facebook at “SPCA Merced” or go to its website, which features information on all its adoptable pets, at www.mercedspca.com.

Eat Dessert First

Merced United Methodist Church will host an Eat Dessert First fundraiser from 3 to 5 p.m. Jan. 31 at the church’s Wesley Hall, 899 Yosemite Parkway. There will be tastings of all kinds of sweet goodies as well as a large variety of fruit, cheese, sugarless samples, nuts, savory appetizers and a chocolate fountain. The fundraiser is sponsored by Wesley Foundation Merced Campus Ministry. A donation of $10 is suggested. For tickets, call 209-722-6327.

Behavioral Health Board meeting

The next Merced County Behavioral Health Board meeting is scheduled for 3 to 5 p.m. Feb. 2 at 1137 B St. and is open to the public.

Vintage Toy and Collectible Show

The Merced Elks Lodge will host a Vintage Toy and Collectible Show from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Feb. 21 at the Elks Lodge, 1910 M St. Early bird entrance is from 9 to 11 a.m. Admission is $5 and $10 for early bird entrance. Kids under 10 years old get in free. Parking also is free. For more information, call 209-631-6277.
