Rivera Elementary book drive

The Merced High School Associated Student Body will be having a book drive for the new Rivera Elementary School. Children’s book donations will be are now being accepted, and the books will be delivered to Rivera Elementary in March. New or gently used children’s book donations (reading levels K-6) are needed.

District 1 town-hall meetings

John Pedrozo, District 1 supervisor for Merced County will hold four town-hall meetings in the upcoming weeks in Le Grand, Planada, Merced and Livingston. The informal public forums allow residents to voice their opinions and hear responses from county and public representatives. The meetings will be at: 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Le Grand Legion Hall, 12560 Le Grand Road; 6:30 p.m. Feb. 3 at Planada Community Center, 9167 E. Stanford Ave.; 6:30 p.m. Feb. 17 at Tenaya Middle School’s multipurpose room, 760 W. Eighth St. in Merced; and 6:30 p.m. Feb. 24 at the Livingston City Council Chambers, 1416 C St.

Knights of Columbus basketball contest

The Atwater Knights of Columbus will sponsor its annual free-throw contest Jan. 30 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Winton Middle School gym, 6300 Cypress Ave. Boys and girls ages 9 to 14 can compete for trophies. A lunch will be served to all contestants. Participants are required to produce proof of age and parental consent. For more information call Jose or Sal Walle at 209-819-0180 or 209-349-1557.

Save Our Youth essay contest

Save Our Youth, a Merced-based nonprofit, is taking entries for its essay-writing contest for children 7 to 11 years old. The essays must be submitted by Feb. 24, and tutoring sessions for essay writing are set for 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 3 and Feb. 17 at the Save Our Youth Leadership Academy, 1903 G St. The top six essays will be awarded with prizes from $20 to $75. Peripheral Neuropathy Support Group

The Merced Peripheral Neuropathy Support Group’s next meeting is from 1 to 2 p.m. Feb. 11 at the Hoffmeister Center, 1920 Canal St. in Merced. If your toes and fingers or feet and hands tingle or feel numb, you might have peripheral neuropathy. Round table discussion and informative handouts will be available. Clutter-Free Workshop

Author and speaker Kathi Lipp will be in Merced on Feb. 27, for a half-day workshop called “Finally Clutter Free.” Lipp will share “no-shame-no-blame” practical housekeeping tips for a clutter-free home. The event is from 9 a.m. to noon at Yosemite Church, 2230 E. Yosemite Ave. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased at iTickets.com or at the Yosemite Church office.
