Climb your family tree

Learn how to trace your roots at the annual “Climbing Your Family Tree” program for beginners. Get started with a free packet of materials, forms and tips to help you find your ancestors. Join the Merced County Genealogical Society at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Gracey Room, Merced County Library, 2100 O Street. The meeting is open to all, no membership is required.

Behavioral Health Board meeting

The next Merced County Behavioral Health Board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday. The meeting will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. at 1137 B Street in Merced and is open to the public.

Chicken and waffle breakfast

A chicken and waffle breakfast is set for Feb. 6 from 9 to 11 a.m. at Bethesda Apostolic Faith Church, 1822 Canal St. in Merced. Donation is $10. People may pick up or dine in. To order, call 209-726-0533 or 209-489-4128.

Tax return help

In partnership with the Internal Revenue Service, AARP of Merced County will be preparing tax returns for free again this year. Help is available Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through April 14 at the Merced Senior Center, 755 W. 15th Street. Help is first come, first served. No appointments taken.

Become a California naturalist

The UC Merced Vernal Pool and Grassland Reserve, in partnership with Merced County UC Cooperative Extension Office and the Upper Merced River Watershed Council, is offering a UC Naturalist Certification Program. A corps of volunteer naturalists and citizen scientists will take an active role in local natural resource conservation, education and restoration. Classes are taught by expert naturalists and cover topics including: water ecosystems, California geology and soils, wildlife and plant communities, and bird studies, among others. The program runs from Feb. 11 to April 21. The course fee is $350. For more information, contact course coordinator Monique Kolster at mkolster@ucmerced.edu.

Big Red One reunion

Veterans of the Army’s renowned 1st Infantry Division, the “Big Red One,” will hold their annual 98th annual reunion in Atlanta, Ga. The reunion will take place June 8-12 at the Hilton Atlanta. Veterans living in the Central Valley who served in the 1st Infantry Division or any unit attached to it are invited to attend. For more details, go to www.1stID.org or call 215-654-1969.
