Uechi-ryu karate

The city of Merced’s Recreation Department is offering Uechi-ryu karate on Mondays and Thursdays for $45 per month. Ages 6 to 12 meet at 5:30 p.m. and ages 13 and up meet at 6:30 p.m. at the Rossotti Ed-Zoo-Cation Center, 1045 W. 25th St. For more information or to register, call 209-385-6298 or go to the Recreation Department office at 678 W. 18th St.

Humane Society adoption event

Looking for a fuzzy valentine? The Merced County Humane Society will be at PetSmart, 1196 W. Olive, Feb. 12-14 for a three-day adoption event. There will be puppies, kittens, dogs and cats all raised in foster homes and ready to find forever homes. Come down to adopt, visit or even to volunteer from noon to 5 p.m. For more information, contact the Human Society on Facebook or email mchs324@gmail.com.

Historical Society membership meeting

The Merced County Historical Society will hold its annual membership meeting at 2 p.m. Feb. 21 at the Merced County Board of Supervisors chambers. A slate of Historical Society officers and board members will be installed and several awards and grants will be presented. This year’s keynote speaker is Merced token and coin collector John Hoffman. The membership meeting is free and open to the public. Transitional kinder at McSwain Elementary

McSwain Elementary School is accepting applications for transitional kindergarten. Roundup will be from 8 to 8:30 p.m. March 1-2 in the west campus library. Children must turn 5 on Sept. 2 through Dec. 16. Parents who live in the McSwain district can call 209-354-2700 to make an appointment.

Native Daughters of the Golden West casino fundraiser

The Native Daughters of the Golden West will sponsor a casino bus trip to Black Oak Casino on March 19. The bus will depart from the Walmart parking lot in Merced at 8:30 a.m. and return about 4:30 p.m. Cost is $25 per person and participants must be 21 years of age or older. All proceeds benefit the Veritas No. 75 Native Daughters of the Golden West scholarship program. People who wish to participate must RSVP by March 16 at 209-724-9617.
