Corned beef and cabbage

Ballico American Legion Post 668’s annual corned beef and cabbage dinner is 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saint Patrick’s Day, March 17, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Legion Hall, 11303 Ballico Ave. in Ballico. The food typically sells out. Tickets are $10. For more, call 209-769-5625.

Code night

Casino trip

The Native Daughters of the Golden West plans a Black Oak Casino bus trip on March 19. It will depart from the Wal-Mart parking lot at 8:30 a.m. and return at 4 p.m. Cost is $25 per person. For more, call Marla at 209-724-9617.

SPCA taking used shoes

The Merced Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is asking for gently worn shoes through April 29. A fundraising group will make donations to the SPCA for every pair of shoes they collect and the shoes will go to another cause. Shoes can be left at the shelter, 1021 E. Water-wise class

A “Water-Wise Edible Landscaping” class will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Merced Gardens and Nursery, 1007 Tahoe St. Presented by the University of California Cooperative Extension master gardeners, the seminars are held in an event tent. Breakfast for VFW

The Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Atwater offers Breakfast at the Hall from 8 to 11 a.m. on the first Sunday of each month at the Veterans Hall, 1390 Broadway Ave. The meal offers omelets and eggs with hash browns, bacon or sausage, biscuits or biscuit and gravy for $7. Waffle with strawberries and cream served with bacon or sausage is $4, and two biscuits with sausage gravy for $3. The meal is open to the public, and proceeds go to programs for veterans. Karaoke in Atwater

Karaoke at the Hall is 7 to 10 p.m. Friday at the Veterans Hall, 1390 Broadway Ave. The event is free and open to the public. The lounge will serve pork sliders for $2 to $2.50 each, and coleslaw is 50 cents. Singers can choose from a wide selection of music. Non-singers are welcome. Ladies lunch

Calling Italians

The Merced County Historical Society and a committee from the Merced Italian Catholic Federation are looking for the community’s help to record family stories and obtain artifacts and photos to showcase how Italian Americans contributed to the growth and development of Merced County, which will be the focus of an exhibit at the Merced County Courthouse Museum in Spring of 2017.
