Rummage sale

Aikido class

Merced College Community Services courses offer aikido, a martial art that relates to both self-defense and conflict resolution. Behavioral Health Board

Communication workshop

The Los Banos Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Merced College Customer Service Academy will offer a workshop on “Communication in the Workplace” 8 a.m. to noon April 6 and again from 1-5 p.m. the same day at the Merced College Los Banos Campus, 22240 Highway 152. Food bank boxes

Merced County Food Bank’s Drought Food Assistance Program is a free temporary program designed to provide assistance to people in the county. Those receiving a food box will be asked to self-certify that they live in a household where drought conditions have caused their underemployment, unemployment or reduced their income. People can receive the roughly 30-pound boxes of food up to two times a week. The Merced County Food Bank at 2000 W. Olive Ave. is open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday. Miss Madera

Applications are available for the 2016 Chowchilla-Madera County Fair Pageant, which is set for May 18. There are three categories: Miss Madera County, Little Miss Madera County and the Tommyhawk Contest. Application packets are available at the Chowchilla Fairgrounds office, 1000 S. Third St., as well as online at www.Chowchillafair.org. They must be submitted by 5 p.m. March 29.

Motorcycle run

The Atwater Kiwanis Club and Blue Star Moms of Merced plan the 11th annual motorcycle ride called Veterans Memorial Support the Troops Run at 10 a.m. April 9. Fill a bag

The Friends of the Merced County Library plan a spring sale called “Fill a Bag,” when shoppers can fill a bag with books for $3. The sale has begun at the main branch, 2100 O St., which opens at 10 a.m. daily, but is closed Sunday. For more, call the library at 209-385-7484.

Used shoes for SPCA

The Merced Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is asking for gently worn shoes through April 29. A fundraising group will make donations to the SPCA for every pair of shoes it collects and the shoes will go to another cause. Shoes can be left at the shelter, 1021 E. Childs Ave., or volunteers will pick them up. To arrange a pickup, call the shelter at 209-384-7722, Florence at 209-723-2574 or Cathy at 209-726-3187.
