Citizens Police Academy

The deadline to apply for the Citizens Police Academy in Merced has been extended to 4 p.m. Monday. From 20 to 25 residents will be able to participate in an 11-week program. The Citizens Police Academy session begins Wednesday and meetings are from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays. Applicants can apply online at www.cityofmerced.org or go to the Police Department, 611 W. 22nd St. For more information, call community liaison Eugene Drummond at 209-385-6297.

Kids golf

The fourth season of The First Tee will begin at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Merced Golf and Country Club, 6333 N. Golf Road. The Sunday classes take place at 1 p.m., and the session continues nine weeks for ages 5 to 17. Cost is $90 per child and $50 for the second child in a family. Scholarships are available. Belly dance fitness

Merced College Community Services is offering a belly dance fitness class for Levels I and II from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, April 19 to May 26. Cost is $60 per person. For more information, call 209-384-6224 or email communitysvc@mccd.edu.

Adult literacy tutors

The Merced County Literacy Program will hold orientation and training for volunteers who would like to become tutors in Merced and surrounding counties. Orientation is from 6 to 7:30 p.m. April 19 at the Merced County Library, 2100 O St. Training is from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. April 22 at the library. Denim Day buttons

The Valley Crisis Center is observing Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April by asking for a $5 donation before Denim Day on April 27. Everyone who donates gets a Denim Day button. HSR in Madera

The California High-Speed Rail Authority will hold a public meeting from 5 to 6:30 p.m. April 20 at the Madera County Library, 121 N. G St., Madera. Rescue Mission dinner

The Merced County Rescue Mission plans its Oasis Benefit Dinner at 5:30 p.m. May 13 at Gateway Community Church, 353 E. Donna Drive. Tickets are $35, or $250 for a table of eight. Tickets are available at www.eventbrite.com.

Castle benefit

AHS Class of ’66
