Mother’s Day

Pet adoption
The Merced County Humane Society plans to hold an adoption event at the Merced PetSmart, 1196 W. Olive Ave. in Merced, from noon-5 p.m. May 13, 14 and 15. The group offers puppies, kittens, dogs and cats, which were all raised in foster homes and are ready to find homes. For more information, look for the society on Facebook or email mchs324@gmail.com.
Republican Women
Merced County Republican Women Federated will meet at 11:30 a.m. May 16 at the Branding Iron Restaurant, 640 W. 16th St. in Merced. Dr. Robert Streeter, vice president of medical affairs for Dignity Health Mercy Medical Center, will be the speaker. Lunch is served at noon. Bunco is also planned as a fundraiser. Tea Party Patriots
The Merced-Atwater Tea Party Patriots is planning a meet-the-candidates-for-supervisor night at 6:30 p.m. May 19 at the VFW Memorial Hall, 1390 Broadway Ave. in Atwater. Several of the candidates have committed to appear; the group will take questions from the audience. The event and parking are free. Relay for Life
Atwater’s Relay For Life is looking for volunteers. Those interested in helping to plan the event for the American Cancer Society can contact Ted Torres at relayforlifeted@gmail.com. No experience is necessary, just enthusiasm, commitment and a desire to make a great event Sept. 17-18.
Merced sewing
A Merced College needlecrafts and sewing class is planned for 3:30-5:30 p.m. every Friday through May 27 at Merced College Educational Center Building 5, which is near G Street and Community College Drive. It’s a free course for older adults. For more information, call 209-381-6540.
Pet and yard sale
Merced’s SPCA plans to hold a yard sale and adoption event from 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m. June 4 at the no-kill shelter, 1021 E. Childs Ave. in Merced. Proceeds from the yard sale will benefit Merced SPCA, which is accepting donations of gently used items from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. every Wednesday through Saturday until June 2. Donations are tax deductible. Until Aug. 31, adoption fees for cats older than 1 year are $30 each; kittens are $70. Adult dogs are $100 and puppies are $120. All animals come with all vaccinations and have been spayed or neutered. Available animals can also be seen at MercedSPCA.com/adoptions. For more information, call 209-384-7722.
