Pet adoption

Merced County Humane Society plans an adoption event at Merced Petsmart, 1196 W. Olive Ave. in Merced, noon-5 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. MS help group

The Merced multiple sclerosis self-help group will meet 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, 500 Buena Vista Ave. Andrea Corvello will provide current information, literature and discuss local activities for individuals with MS. Living history

Bettencourt Family Ranch’s living history event, titled “Rendezvous 1825,” is 9 a.m.-3 p.m. May 14 at River Oaks Range, 11584 N. Shaffer Road in Winton. Admission is free. Lunch is for sale. Tea party

The Merced-Atwater Tea Party Patriots plans a meet-the-candidates-for-supervisor night at 6:30 p.m. May 19 at the VFW Memorial Hall, 1390 Broadway Ave. in Atwater. Several candidates have committed to appear. The group will take questions from the audience. The event and parking are free. Adult coed softball

The Livingston Recreation Department is accepting rosters for the adult coed summer softball league through 5 p.m. May 27. Packets are available at City Hall, 1416 C St. Games will be played on Mondays and Fridays, depending on division, at Lil’ Guys ’n’ Gals Field in Livingston. There’s an eight-team limit per division. Memorial service

The Merced American Legion Post 83 plans its annual Memorial Day services at 10 a.m. May 30 at Merced District Cemetery, 1300 B St. The service includes the posting of the colors then lowering it to half-staff. The guest speaker is retired Air Force Lt. Col. Michael Prusak, who is also of the Civil Air Patrol, acting commander for the California Wing. Terri Pickard, a Gold Star mom, and Danielle Lightner, a Blue Star mom, will place a memorial wreath and folded flag at the base of the flag pole. A rifle salute and taps is also planned.

Military appreciation

Postal Connections, 1120 Commerce Ave., in Atwater is recognizing May as Military Appreciation Month by accepting donations of care-package items to be sent to men and women stationed at a U.S. Marine Corps Combined Arms Training Center in Shizuoka, Japan. Suggested items include packaged healthy snacks, drink mix packets, microwavable food, nonperishable food and toiletries. For more, call 209-356-0557.

Cooking matters

Merced’s Parks and Recreation Department offers a summer “Cooking Matters” class for sixth- to ninth-graders at the Senior Community Center Kitchen, 755 W. 15th St. in Merced. The first session is June 21, 23, 28 and 30; and the second is July 5, 7, 12 and 14. It is free, but registration is required.
