Drought-tolerant plants

Democratic benefit

The Merced County Democratic Central Committee will host U.S. Rep. Jim Costa, D-Fresno, and California Assemblyman Adam Gray, D-Merced, at its “Wine to Win” fundraiser at 6 p.m. Saturday at the home of Greg and Kara Parle in Merced. It will feature an evening of varietal wines and appetizers. Semi-formal attire is requested. Tickets are $100 per person. For tickets, call Kara Parle at 209-769-5272.

Republican Women

Merced County Republican Women Federated will meet at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the Branding Iron Restaurant, 640 W. 16th St. in Merced. Dr. Robert Streeter, vice president of medical affairs for Dignity Health Mercy Medical Center, will be the speaker. Lunch is served at noon. Bunco is also planned as a fundraiser. Merced dance

Pet and yard sale

Merced’s SPCA is planning a yard sale and adoption event 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 4 at the no-kill shelter, 1021 E. Childs Ave. in Merced. Proceeds from the yard sale will benefit Merced SPCA, which is accepting donations of gently used items from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Wednesday through Saturday until June 2. Donations are tax-deductible. Until Aug. 31, adoption fees for cats older than 1 year are $30 each; kittens are $70. Adult dogs are $100 and puppies are $120. All animals come with vaccinations and have been spayed or neutered. Available animals can be seen at MercedSPCA.com/adoptions. For more information, call 209-384-7722.

Swim lessons

Merced’s Parks and Recreation Department will offer summer swim lessons Mondays through Thursdays in three session June 6-16, June 20-30 and July 11-21 in the McNamara Park pool, 1040 Canal St. Cost is $10 and registration in advance is required. Summer session

Registration is ongoing for summer-session classes at Merced College, which begin June 6. At the Merced and Los Banos campuses, counseling and other student services offices are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. On June 7-8, offices will extend hours to 7 p.m. Summer registration fees are $46 per unit. The health fee is $14 and the parking fee is $10 for the session. Free venue awaits

The Pacheco Village and Pacheco Court Apartments are offering free venue use. There is meeting space with capacity for as many as 60 people and community rooms with kitchens available for local organizations, churches and nonprofit agencies to use for meetings and activities.
