Arts & Spirits

The Merced County Arts Council and Arbor Gallery plans Art & Spirits on the third Friday of each month. The next evening of wine and painting is 5:30-8:30 p.m. Friday. An experienced Arbor Gallery artist will show you everything you need to know, and all refreshments and supplies are included in the $35 charge. The artist for May is Rose Tripp. Space is limited. Kids classes

Free art classes for children 3-5 are planned at Epekel Art Gallery, 1733 Canal St. in Merced. They are 5-7 p.m. Friday and June 10, 17, 24. To register for the limited seats, call Kimberly Zamora at 209-658-0661 or email kimberly@mercedarthop.org.

Merced dance

The Martin Martinez Jr. Trio plays for the dance 2-5 p.m. Sunday at Merced Senior Community Center, 755 W. 15th St. Cost is $8. Refreshments available. For more, call 209-723-0849 or 209-628-8734.

AARP meets

The May AARP meeting will be held at 9:30 a.m. May 25 at Merced Senior Community Center, 755 W. 15th St. Our programs this year arranged by President Ray Young were designed to be musical treats. This month includes The Sweet Adelines, whose members recently celebrated their 50th anniversary in Merced. Complimentary refreshments will be served. All current members of AARP are urged to attend and bring a guest.

Cemetery calling

Merced Cemetery is asking for volunteers to join an effort at 8:30 a.m. May 28 at the 1300 B St. cemetery to place a cross and a flag at the graves of all the veterans. Pizza will be served immediately following. At 10 a.m. May 30 the cemetery plans a ceremony to honor fallen heroes. For more, call 209-383-4111.

Sober grad

The Sober Grad Night board is in search for volunteers age 21 or older for two-hour shifts between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. June 2-3 at El Capitan High School, 100 Farmland Ave. Volunteers help give out food, take tickets, and run games and entertainment. Pet and yard sale

Merced’s SPCA plans a yard sale and adoption event 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m. June 4 at the no-kill shelter, 1021 E. Childs Ave. in Merced. Proceeds from the yard sale benefit Merced SPCA, which is accepting donations of gently used items 10 a.m.-1 p.m. every Wednesday through Saturday until June 2. Donations are tax deductible. Until Aug. 31, adoption fees for cats older than 1 year are $30 each, while kittens are $70. Adult dogs are $100 and puppies are $120. All animals come with all vaccinations and spay or neuter. Swim lessons

Merced’s Parks and Recreation Department offers summer swim lessons Mondays through Thursdays in three sessions from June 6-16, June 20-30 and July 11-21 in the McNamara Park pool, 1040 Canal St. Cost is $10 and registration in advance is required. La Grange arts

A showcase of local art, jewelry, sewn creations and other goodies is 10 a.m.-3 p.m. June 18 at IOOF Hall in La Grange, 30018 Yosemite Blvd. Admission is free. Vendor spots of 6 feet by 8 feet are available for $25. For more, call Patty 209-604-4444 or or Amanda 209-988-0934.
