McSwain school town hall meeting
Merced County Supervisor Daron McDaniel and other area officials will host a town hall meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at the McSwain Union Elementary School gymnasium, 926 Scott Road in Merced. The informal public meeting is an opportunity for residents to voice opinions and question public representatives on relevant issues. The event is free and open to the public. Free drought workshop in Merced
Join the Merced Gardens & Nursery, 1007 Tahoe St. in Merced, at 11 a.m. Saturday for a free drought workshop, Water Mitigation & Drip Systems, presented by UCCE master gardeners. Learn how to replace sprinklers with low-water options that decrease water use while maintaining a gorgeous landscape. Also, learn how to build a basic backyard drip system. Open Cockpit Day at Castle
Castle Air Museum will celebrate Open Cockpit Day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Dozens of vintage military aircraft will be open for viewing. Additionally, the event will feature law enforcement canine demonstrations, Cal Fire Merced County firefighters, classic rock music, as well as helicopter rides and other children’s activities. Adult admission is $14 per person, $8 for seniors; children ages 6 to 17 are $5; children 5 and under and military members are free. Memorial Day
The Livingston-Delhi VFW and Auxiliary plans a Memorial Day Service at 5 p.m. Monday at Livingston Memorial Park, on the corner of Park and Main streets. The program will be followed by refreshments at the Livingston Veterans Memorial Building, 1605 Seventh St. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend the event, but asked to bring their own seating. Summer meals
The Weaver Union School District will be participating in the Seamless Summer meal program. Free meals are provided to children ages 1 to 18 during the summer as part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s program. In addition, the district will also serve as a distribution location for the Merced County Food Banks Drought Assistance Program. The sites are 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 6-July 18 at Ronald D. Brooks Park; noon to 1 p.m. June 6-July 18 at The Grove apartments, 340 S. Exhibit opening at museum
The Merced County Courthouse Museum will open a “Let’s Google That Old Road” exhibit at 5 p.m. June 16. Integrating Google Earth technology into the study of old hand-drawn road maps of Merced County from 1855-1899, the exhibit will bring a new level of understanding of demography, geography and the settlement patterns of the county in the second half of the 19th century. Along the way of searching these old roads, visitors can discover landmarks and homes that were destroyed or relocated due to construction or development. At the exhibit opening, Merced County ghost town historian Herb Wood will give a PowerPoint presentation, “Old Roads and Forgotten Trails,” at 6 p.m. For more information on the free event, contact the Courthouse Museum at 209-723-2401.
Zoo camp
Merced Applegate Zoo will be having two zoo camp sessions this summer at the Rossotti Center. The first, for ages 6-9, is July 11-15; the other, for ages 10-12, is July 18-22. Each session is 9 a.m.-noon and will be limited to 25 children. Registration forms are in the zoo gift shop, 1045 W. 25th St., from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Registrations must be returned by July 1. Cost is $40 per child, and $35 for each additional child in the same family. For more information, call 209-725-3337.
