Animal fundraiser

New Beginnings for Merced County Animals is planning a fundraiser from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Merced Applebee’s, 1734 W. Olive Ave. Takeout is also available. Tickets are $7.50 and can be purchased at Valley Animal Hospital, 58 W. 16th St.; Christina’s Fine Clothing, 2852 G St.; or Santa Fe Pet Hospital at 3113 N. Beachwood Drive. Pet and yard sale

The Merced Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is planning a yard sale and adoption event from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 4 at the no-kill shelter, 1021 E. Childs Ave. Proceeds from the yard sale will benefit Merced SPCA, which is accepting donations of gently used items from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. Donations are tax-deductible. Until Aug. 31, adoption fees for cats older than 1 year are $30 each, while kittens are $70. Adult dogs are $100 and puppies are $120. Animals come with all vaccinations and have been spayed or neutered. Available animals can be seen online at MercedSPCA.com/adoptions. For more information, call 209-384-7722.

CRTA memorial/luncheon

The California Retired Teachers Association will host a memorial and luncheon at 10 a.m. June 6 at the Fish and Game Building at Lake Yosemite. The general meeting and luncheon begins at 11 a.m. The memorial will honor those CRTA retired members who have passed away during the year. The free event is open to the public.

Old-road exhibit

The Merced County Courthouse Museum will open a “Let’s Google That Old Road” exhibit at 5 p.m. June 16. Integrating Google Earth technology into the study of old hand-drawn road maps of Merced County from 1855 to 1899, the exhibit will bring a new level of understanding of demography, geography and the settlement patterns of the county in the second half of the 19th century. Along the way of searching these old roads, visitors can discover landmarks and homes that were destroyed or relocated because of construction or development. At the exhibit opening, Merced County ghost town historian Herb Wood will give a PowerPoint presentation, “Old Roads and Forgotten Trails,” at 6 p.m. For more information on the free event, contact the Courthouse Museum at 209-723-2401.

Young writers workshop

The UC Merced Writing Project is hosting its seventh annual Bobcat Young Writers Academy on June 20-30. The academy is for students entering first through eighth grades in the fall and will be held 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday from at the UC Merced campus. Registration is $215 for the first child, $190 for each additional child in a family. During the two weeks, students write daily, sharing, discussing, revising and editing their writing with other young writers – all under the guidance of UC Merced Writing Project teacher consultants.

Summer meals

The Weaver Union School District will be participating in the Seamless Summer meal program. Free meals are provided to children ages 1 to 18 during the summer as part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture program. In addition, the district also will serve as a distribution location for the Merced County Food Bank’s Drought Assistance Program. The times and sites: 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 6 through July 18 at Ronald D. Brooks Park; noon to 1 p.m. June 6 through July 18 at The Grove apartments, 340 S. Zoo camp

Merced Applegate Zoo will have two zoo camp sessions this summer at the Rossotti Center. The first, for ages 6 to 9, is July 11-15; the other, for ages 10 to 12, is July 18-22. Each session is 9 a.m. to noon and will be limited to 25 children. Registration forms are in the zoo gift shop, 1045 W. 25th St., from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Registrations must be returned by July 1. Cost is $40 per child, and $35 for each additional child in the same family. For more information, call 209-725-3337.
