Public health
The Merced County Department of Public Health has set several community health planning meetings in July and August. Menudo sale
Club Mercedes will serve menudo from 8 a.m. to noon, or until supplies last, on Sunday at the hall, 569 W. Ninth St. A baby bowl is $4, medium is $8 and large is $9. Quesadillas are $1.50 each. Adult tutors
The Merced County Literacy Program offers orientation and training for volunteers who would like to become tutors for adults in Merced and surrounding counties. Orientation is 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Merced County Library, 2100 O St. Training is 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 6 at the library. There are thousands of adults in need of one-to-one academic help. Play dates
Challenged Family Resource Center is having a free play group 11 a.m. to noon every Tuesday at the parent Education Center, 827 West 23rd St. in Merced, for typically developing children and non-typically developing children up to 5 years old. For more, stop by or call 209-384-0119.
Catfish dinner
The ninth annual Odd Fellows Catfish Dinner and Raffle will be 3 to 7 p.m. Aug. 6 at the IOOF Hall, 30018 Yosemite Blvd. in La Grange. Cost is $12 for adults. For dinner and raffle tickets, call 209-853-2128.
Free health fest
Castle Family Health Centers is planning the ninth annual Summer Family Health Festival from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 6 at Castle Clinic, 3605 Hospital Road, Atwater. Admission is free and organizers will offer free health screenings for vision, glaucoma, hearing, diabetes, blood pressure and breast cancer. Dental exams are free for children. Christian singer
Singer-songwriter Bobby Jo Valentine will return at 7 p.m. Aug. 14 to United Methodist Church in Merced, 899 Yosemite Parkway, for a CD release party for his new album.
