Adult tutors
The Merced County Literacy Program offers orientation and training for volunteers who would like to become tutors for adults in Merced and surrounding counties. Orientation is 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Merced County Library, 2100 O St. Training is 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the library. There are thousands of adults in need of one-on-one academic help. Habitat volunteers
Habitat for Humanity is looking for volunteers at the next Volunteer Orientation 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church Library, 2916 N. McKee Road, Merced. Free health fest
Castle Family Health Centers plans the ninth annual Summer Family Health Festival 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at Castle Clinic, 3605 Hospital Road, Atwater. Admission is free, and organizers will offer free health screenings for vision, glaucoma, hearing, diabetes, blood pressure and breast cancer. Dental exams are free for children. BBQ Cook Off
Club Mercedes’ third Annual BBQ Cook Off is open to the public at noon Aug. 13 at the club, 569 W. Ninth St., Merced. There’s a $5 cover charge for adults, and $3 for children 5 to 12. Teams of up to four people can submit entry forms now. The entry fee is $50 to compete. Rules can be picked up at the club after 4 p.m. or by calling Danny Tapetillo at 209-769-7252. There will be a meeting for all cooks at 6 p.m. the day before the cook-off in the club’s lounge. For more information, call the club at 209-383-9906.

Quilters meet
Gateway Quilters’ Guild meets at 7 p.m. on the third Monday of the month at the Merced Health Department, 260 E. 15th St. The Christmas in July meeting is when the group will be making Christmas ornaments for its tree for the Merced County Courthouse Museum in December. Autism support
Challenged Family Resource Center plans an autism support group for families with a child or adult who has autism from 5-6:30 p.m. every third Thursday of the month at the Challenged office, 827 W. 20th St., Merced. For more, stop by or call 209-384-0119.
Sunday Dance
