Horse sanctuary

Wayward Ponies’ Home is a small equine sanctuary in Catheys Valley. Its sixth annual open house is noon to 2 p.m. Feb. 21. Admission, refreshments, children’s activities and one raffle ticket for a gate prize are free. There will also be a $20 potluck-style raffle, in which each ticket buyer is guaranteed a pot full of prizes worth $50 or more. The sanctuary needs tax-deductible donations of new, prizeworthy items or gift certificates. Retired women luncheon

The retired women of Merced College will meet for their monthly luncheon 11:30 a.m. Thursday at LaHacienda 2, 3355 G St. in Merced. Reconnect with good friends who retired from Merced College. Volunteer literacy tutors sought

Volunteer literacy tutors are being sought to help adults at Merced County libraries. Call the Read And Succeed-Merced Adult Literacy Program at (209) 385-7391 to reserve your space at an informational orientation 6 to 7:30 p.m. March 3 at the Merced County Library, 2100 O St. in Merced, or 6 to 7:30 p.m. March 18 at the Los Banos Library, 1312 Seventh St. in Los Banos. Participants must be 18 or older and have a high school diploma or GED. Reservation required.

Tea Party meeting

The Merced-Atwater Tea Party regular monthly meeting will be 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 19 at the Atwater Memorial Building, Fifth Street and Broadway Avenue in Atwater. This will be an organizational and idea generating meeting for the forthcoming year. Discussions will include but not be limited to bylaws upgrade, fundraising, event participation and major issues to focus on. Everyone is invited to attend and participate.

Elks Park pancake breakfast

The Merced Elks Park monthly Pancake Breakfast will be 8 to 10:30 a.m. Feb. 22 at the Elks Lodge, 1910 M St. in Merced. Pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage and fresh fruit are on the menu. Coffee and orange juice will be served and Bloody Marys will be available. Admission is $6 for adults and $3 for children. Call (209) 761-6801 for more information.

SCORE meeting

Existing and potential new business people are invited to attend the Business Connector 5:30 to 7 p.m. Feb. 19 at the Greater Merced Chamber of Commerce office, 640 N St. SCORE and the chamber are cooperating to provide assistance in improving the business climate in the community. SCORE is a nonprofit organization that provides free consulting to existing and startup small businesses.
