South Florida designer takes home James Beard Award

Alejandro Barrios-Carrero won a 2013 James Beard Award for Juvia in Miami Beach.

His award for Outstanding Restaurant Design, 75 or more seats, was presented at a gala Monday night in New York.

Hedy Goldsmith, executive pastry chef at Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink in Miami, was a finalist in the Outstanding Pastry Chef category for her second consecutive year. This year’s award went to Brooks Headley of Del Posto in New York.

Jeff McInnis, executive chef and partner at Yardbird Southern Table & Bar in Miami Beach, was a finalist in the Best Chef: South category. The award went to Tory McPhail of Commander’s Palace in New Orleans.

Miami Herald columnist Maricel Presilla earned a Beard Award for her “Gran Cocina Latina,” which was announced last week as Cookbook of the Year as part of the Book, Broadcast and Journalism categories. She was named Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic in 2012.

The Beard awards, considered the Oscars of the food world, are presented each year by the James Beard Foundation, a New York-based nonprofit named for late cookbook author and teacher James Beard. A full list of this year’s winners is available at jamesbeard.org/awards.
