Michelle Oliver: Advent of warmer weather means it’s time for shorts

My goodness, is it really May already? Where has this year gone? Well, May means one thing: shorts season.

Every year when shorts season rolls around there’s always a big question of what trends are going to pop up this time. Some of them are classic – they will always be in – and others should never come back. One trend that will always stay en vogue is white shorts.

The minute the sun comes out to stay, I start wearing white shorts. There is just something that feels sophisticated and cute about a dark-colored top with light-colored shorts or pants.

Today’s outfit features one of my favorite looks. It just so happens to consist of red, white and blue. I’m a very patriotic person so this is my favorite outfit to wear for small-town events.

I found this shirt at the outlets in Livermore. I love taking a trip to the outlets. Sometimes it’s hit or miss, but the day I found this top, I fell in love. My favorite part is the navy buttons it has going down the back of the shirt. The most delicate details make the most impact.

I paired it with my favorite white shorts. These shorts are not too short nor see-through, so they are perfect for summertime. Can’t forget my pop of color – I added a pair of bright neon green accented shoes to give it something extra. My mom wasn’t sure what look I was going for with the shoes, but I love them.

There are so many styles of shorts to wear during summer and I just have to share a few more of my favorites.

I am really into longer shorts right now. Not board shorts or Bermuda shorts necessarily, but ones that are a happy medium between the short white ones shown in the photo and knee-length ones.

I saw a pair the other day that were cuffed and came to about midthigh. They were perfect. If I didn’t own a ridiculous amount of shorts already, I would have bought those. Pair those shorts with a cute spaghetti-strap shirt or a sleeveless tank and you’re set for a fun day of shopping or a lazy Saturday walking around town.

I know that hot weather is coming at a rapid rate so I have been trying to wear colorful shorts with my favorite jean jacket as much as possible. I know that within the next month I will have to move my jean jacket to the back of my closet and that absolutely breaks my heart.

Until then I will just wear it to death. If you see me around town wearing it, just smile and nod. Jean jackets are my go-to when there is a slight breeze or chill in the air. They match virtually everything, and I have yet to find an outfit I don’t like to wear one with.
