More people in Merced County will be able to mend their hearts on Valentines Day with the upgraded wellness center for patients at Mercy Medical Center, according to hospital staff.
A renovated Cardiac and Pulmonary Wellness Center will be available for recovering heart and lung patients to use on Wednesday, said Henry Moreno, cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation supervisor. The old rehabilitation center “is not so user friendly,” Moreno said, and the remodel makes the space more convenient and easy to get to for patients.
Since many have to travel outside of the county for heart surgeries “it’s extremely important” to have a local rehabilitation center available for patients, Moreno said.
“Heart disease is a big deal and that's why Mercy (Medical Center) is going along with trend,” Moreno said.

Heart disease is the number one killer in the county, according to data from the Merced County Public Health Department, and respiratory disease is the fourth leading cause of death. Both diseases are also largely preventable and manageable with lifestyle changes.
More than 85 percent of Merced County adults report one or more risk factors for cardiovascular disease, data shows. The county is ranked 45th out of California’s 58 counties on heart disease death rates.
