Health officials remind public it’s not too late for flu shots
Merced County health officials are reminding the public that it is not too late to receive a flu shot.
According to officials, getting a flu shot is the best way to prevent the flu from spreading. They ask that everyone 6 months of age or older get vaccinated against the flu annually.
People with asthma or other chronic lung diseases, heart disease or diabetes are especially encouraged to get vaccinated. Pregnant women and senior citizens, as well as those who care for these high-risk groups, should also ensure they get vaccinated to prevent influenza.
“Health providers are beginning to see an increase in cases of the flu,” Kathleen Grassi, director of the Merced County Department of Public Health, said in a press statement Wednesday. “Now is the time to get a flu shot from your regular doctor or clinic.”
Health officials have explained that the flu season typically starts in October and can last until May, with the season peaking in January and February.
There are no reported shortages of flu vaccine this year, according to officials. The health department will continue to offer flu shots at weekly clinics in Merced and Los Banos.
In Merced, flu shots are available at 260 E. 15th St. In Los Banos, the location is 415 F St. For dates and times, people can call the department’s flu information line at (209) 381-1180 or the department’s immunization program at (209) 381-1023.
